Matt Curley had barely learned to walk before he found himself in
skates, hockey stick in hand. It's a typical story for most guys
who end up playing this game for a living.
The backdrop for Curley's start is a bit atypical, though.
He grew up in Louisville, N.Y., a tiny town of 3,195 near the
Canadian border that barely had enough kids for a full hockey team.
Curley skated in an old rink with natural ice and a chicken-wire
fence.
