Team Notes: Clarkson Looks to Get on Winning Track in 2009
The following article appeared December 30 on the Clarkson Web site.
Goodbye and good riddance to 2008. After experiencing two of the
program’s most memorable moments in March of the past
calendar year, closing out last season with the ECAC Hockey Regular
Season title and its first NCAA Tournament victory since the
mid-1990s, not much went the Clarkson University Hockey
team’s way in the opening half of the 2008-09 campaign.
Beginning with a preseason injury to senior Shea Guthrie (Carleton
Place, ONT), which forced one of last year’s NCAA tourney
standouts to miss the first four games, the Golden Knights have
struggled, hampered by injuries, bad luck and poor play.
Sixth-year head coach George Roll, associate coach Greg Drechsel
and assistant coach Jean-Francois Houle will look to turn the Green
and Gold’s season around in 2009 and put Clarkson back on
track for a strong showing down the stretch. The Knights return to
action after a two-week break when they compete in the Ohio Hockey
Classic, hosted by Ohio State at the Value City Arena in Columbus
on January 2-3. Clarkson will face a very stiff challenge in its
first game of the New Year as it faces off against 2nd-ranked Miami
University in the opening round of the tournament this Friday. Game
time is 5:05 p.m., followed by the Ohio State-Army game. The
winners of the first round will play in Saturday’s
championship game at either 5:05 p.m. or 8:05 p.m.
