Team Notes: Clarkson Takes Break From NCAA Play
The following article appeared October 28 on the Clarkson Web site.
Skating even for 130 minutes against the number-one ranked team
in the country has given the Clarkson University Hockey team the
confidence that it can play with any team in the nation. The Golden
Knights battled highly-rated Colorado College in a two-game series
this past weekend at Cheel Arena, posting a 1-1 tie on Friday and a
2-2 draw on Saturday.
Guided by sixth-year head coach George Roll, associate coach Greg
Drechsel and assistant coach Jean-Francois Houle, Clarkson owns a
1-1-2 overall record heading into Saturday’s exhibition game
at home against Canadian foe Carleton University. The Green and
Gold resume NCAA play on November 7 when they host Brown University
in their ECAC Hockey opener. Led by senior co-captains Tyrell Mason
(Dawson Creek, BC) and Phil Paquet (Quebec City, QUE), the Golden
Knights are ranked 14th/15th, respectively, in the latest USA
Today/USA Hockey Magazine and USCHO.com/CBS College Sports national
polls.
First-year goaltender Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT), one of
seven Clarkson freshmen in the lineup against Colorado College,
played a key role in the Knights’ effort against the Tigers,
and was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for the second
straight time. He backstopped Clarkson, holding Colorado College to
just three goals through two overtime games. The 2008 St. Louis
Blues draft choice posted 33 saves on 34 shots in Friday’s
tie, allowing only a power-play goal, and turned aside 28 shots on
Saturday. Karpowich finished with 61 saves on 64 shots for a .953
save percentage for the weekend against the WCHA’s Tigers.
