POTSDAM - The postgame handshake with Boston College coach Jerry York after Saturday night's nonconference game at Cheel Arena won't be business as usual for Clarkson head coach George Roll.
Clarkson's 7 p.m. game with the Eagles, who played in the NCAA championship game last season, marks the first time Roll has ever coached against his former coach.
Roll played for York at Bowling Green University from 1981-85 and was part of the Falcons' national championship squad in 1984.
"I don't consider (York) a peer," Roll said. "I have a lot of respect for him. No matter what the situation, he always remains positive. I've tried to emulate him in that aspect."
Roll said it will be a bit strange to see his former coach standing on the other side of the ice as an opponent.
"Once the game starts it will be fine," Roll said. "I look forward to it."
Not only is York Roll's former coach, he also was Clarkson's coach, beginning his career by heading the Golden Knights from 1972-79.
York compiled a 125-87-3 record during his time at Clarkson and coached the school's all-time leading scorer, Dave Taylor. He left for the Bowling Green job, where he remained until 1994. He's been coaching the Eagles since the 1994-95 season.
"I've called him numerous times when I've needed some advice and always looked to him for guidance," Roll said.
Roll played 161 games for York, finishing his career at Bowling Green with 62 goals and 90 assists for 152 points. His best season was his senior year in 1984-85 when he registered 20 goals and 31 assists in 39 games.
Roll said many of his coaching tendencies have come from York. One trademark of both men is leaving their skilled players room to work.
"I firmly believe you are only as good as your players," Roll said. "I don't want them to be shackled with systems. I think good players make good plays."
