Team Notes: Bears Kick Off Stretch of 16 Straight League Games
This Weekend: Brown begins a stretch of 16 straight ECAC Hockey contests this weekend when it hosts Princeton and Quinnipiac in a pair of 7:00 games. The Bears will be looking to stretch their current three-game winning streak and climb above .500 for the first time since mid-November when Brown was 3-2-0. Brown will also be looking to move up in the ECAC Hockey standings, as the Bears are currently in 11th place. That placing is deceiving, however, as Brown (and Yale) has played the fewest League games with just six so far this season.
This Date Historically Speaking: All-time,
Brown is 11-8-0 in games played on January 6th, including a 2-0-0
record against Princeton. The two games against the Tigers were
played in 1962 at home (3-2) and in 1990 on the road (4-2). Brown
is 7-2-0 in home games played on January 6th, includng a 5-1-0
record at Meehan Auditorium. All-time, Brown is 8-12-2 on January
7th, including a 5-4-1 record in home games. Brown has never faced
Quinnipiac on January 7th.
Last Time Out: The Bears won their third
straight game, and second in a row by a 5-2 score, on Sunday
January 1st, defeating cross-town rival Providence, 5-2, in the
26th Annual Mayor's Cup. It was Brown's first win in the series
with PC since the 2006-07 season. After falling behind, 2-0, Brown
stormed back with five straight goals, including three in the final
8 minutes of the second period, to come back for the win.
Freshman Ryan
Jacobson, this week's ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week, led the
team with two goals, both on the power play, and an assist, while
freshman Matt
Lorito also had three points with a goal and two assists.

Maclellan earned 1st star honors with a goal, the
game-winner, and an assist. He has now scored in four straight
games and has had the game-winning goal in each of the last three
games. Brown's other goal was scored by junior Chris
Zaires, who tallied his first of the season to get Brown on the
board at 12:47 of the 2nd. Senior Mike
Clemente earned the win with 28 saves, including 12 in the
final 20 minutes.
Brown vs. Princeton: This weekend will mark the 154th meeting all-time, and the second meeting this season, between Brown and Princeton as the Bears will face the Tigers three times during the regular season for the fourth year in a row. Brown holds an 81-64-8 advantage over Princeton in the all-time series, which dates back to a 4-4 tie during the 1899-1900 season. The Tigers had recently won eight straight contests over Brown, starting with a 4-3 win in the 2007 playoffs, before Brown snapped the winning streak with a 3-1 victory in Providence on December 4, 2009. Under head coach Brendan Whittet, Brown has a 3-3-0 record over Princeton. Senior Jack Maclellan is Brown's statistical leader against the Tigers with eight points (4g, 4a) in 10 career games, while sophomore Garnet Hathaway (1g, 3a) and junior Chris Zaires (4a) each have four points in four and seven games, respectively.
Scouting Princeton: Princeton enters the
Brown game with an overall record of 4-9-4 after posting matching
3-3 ties against Northeastern and Niagara at the Mariucci Classic
last weekend. The Tigers are looking to end a five-game winless
streak. Princeton has played the most league games of the 12 and is
ninth in the ECAC standings with a 3-7-1 mark. Sophomore Jack
Berger is the team's leading scorer with seven goals and six
assists for 13 points. Berger also leads the team with three power
play goals. Classmate Andrew Calof has 11 points on four goals and
seven assists. Defenders Micahel Sdao and Derrick Pallis are next
on the score sheet with 10 and nine points, respectively, with
Pallis leading the squad in assists with eight. Sophomore Sean
Bonar has made 13 starts in goal and has a 2.94 goals against
average and an .899 save percentage. Junior Mike Condon has made
four starts and has a 2.92 GAA and a .911 save
percentage. The pair split games at the Mariucci Classic.
Brown vs. Quinnipiac: Brown and Quinnipiac,
met four times in 2010-11, playing to a pair of ties during the
regular season (3-3 in Providence & 2-2 in Hamden), before the
Bobcats posted a pair of 4-0 wins in the first round of the ECAC
Hockey playoffs to improve to 10-4-2 in the all-time series with
the Bears. Prior to the ties last season, the two teams had split
the regular season series in each of the previous two seasons. The
Bobcats won the first-ever meeting between teh two schools (3-2,
ot) in January 2006. Junior Chris Zaires (3a, 6 games) in Brown's
statistical leader against Quinnipiac, while three other players
all have two career points - sophomore Dennis
Robertson (2g, 4 games), senior Jeff
Buvinow (2g, 7 games), and sophomore Mark
Hourihan(1g, 1a, 4 games).
Scouting Quinnipiac: The Bobcats enter
Friday night's contest at Yale with an 11-7-4 record and a 3-4-3
mark in the ECAC. Quinnipiac opened the second half of the year
with a tie (2-2) and a loss (4-1) at Nebraska-Omaha on December
30th and 31st. The tie on the 30th stretched the Bobcats' unbeaten
streak to six games (4-0-2) at the time, a streak that followed a
stretch of six games where Quinnipiac went 0-4-2 from November
4-19. The Bobcats are led by junior Jeremy Langlois (12g, 8a), who
also leads the team with 6 power play goals and two game-winning
goals in 21 games. Sophomore Connor Jones adds 19 points (5g, 14a)
in 19 games, while sophomore Kellen Jones (5g, 10a), freshman
Matthew Peca (4g, 11a), and senior Scott Zurevinski (4g, 11a) all
have 15 points in 18, 21, and 22 games, respectively. Two other
players have reached double digits in scoring, while an additional
16 have posted at least one point. Junior Eric Hartzell has played
the majority of time in net this season and has earned a 2.08 GAA
with a .912 save percentage in 14 games (5-4-4). Senior Dan Clarke
has appeared in nine games and has a 2.05 GAA and a .901 save
percentage with a 6-3-0 record.
Brown/Dunkin' Donuts Center to Host 2013 NCAA
Regional: Brown will host the 2013 NCAA Men's Hockey
East Regional at Providence's Dunkin' Donuts Center, marking the
ninth NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament competition in Providence,
but first since 2003. The Dunkin' Donuts Center, formerly known as
the Providence Civic Center, has hosted the Frozen Four six times,
and this will be the third time it has hosted regional competition.
Game dates have not been finalized, but will be held between March
29-31, 2013. The regional winner earns a trip to the 2013 Frozen
Four at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA (April
11-13).
Multimedia: Brown is in its fifth year of a
partnership with America One (previously B2 Networks) to handle all
video and audio streaming needs. Video and audio, called by Mike
Rubin '00, for all 12 of Brown's home games will be streamed live
over the internet. In addition, five regular season away games will
be shown live via America One. Cost to view the games is $8.00 per
day or fans can purchase a hockey season pass (all Brown men's
& women's games) for a fee of $75.00. Free audio for all home
games and select away games will also be available. In addition to
Brown's normal audio broadcasts on brownbears.com, five other games

Brendan Whittet '94: Brown alum Brendan
Whittet, class of 1994, returns for his third season as Brown's
bench boss. A 15-year veteran of the college coaching ranks,
Whittet guided the Bears to one of their most successful seasons in
recent history in his first season at the helm. Under Whittet's
guidance, Brown won 13 games, the most since winning 16 during the
2004-05 season. The Bears improved in nearly every facet of their
game offensively, while advancing to the ECAC Hockey Championship
Tournament for the first time since 2003. During the regular season
last year, he helped lead the Bears to a 9th-place finish in the
ECAC Hockey standings, Brown's highest finish since 2005. A former
defenseman for the Bears, Whittet is the 15th head coach in the
111-year history of the Brown men's hockey program and the 4th
Brown hockey alum to coach the team, joining Wescott E.S. Moulton
'31 (1948-52), Donald F. Whiston '51 (1953-55), and J. Allan Soares
'60 (1971-74).
Farnham Nominated for Hockey Humanitarian
Award: Senior assistant captain Bobby
Farnham has been nominated for the 2012 Hockey
Humanitarian Award. Given each season to an NCAA college hockey
player, male or female, Division I-III, who best exemplifies
personal character, a commitment to studies, and significantly
contributions to his/her larger community.
Maclellan Named Pre-Season
All-League: Senior Jack Maclellan was named
Pre-Season All-ECAC Hockey in a vote by the 12 ECAC Head Coaches. A
Second Team All-ECAC honoree a year ago, Maclellan is coming off a
junior season in which he led Brown with 17 assists and 31 points,
despite missing the last six games of the year with a foot
injury.
Maclellan A Candidate for 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS
Award: Senior Jack Maclellan was named a candidate
for the 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Presented annually to the
outstanding senior NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year
across ten different sports, the acronym "CLASS" stands for
Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®. One
of 20 candidates for the 2012 Men's Hockey Award, Maclellan is one
of three senior student-athletes from the Ivy League and ECAC
Hockey, joining Dartmouth's Doug Jones and Cornell's Keir Ross. The
20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the
regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official
ballot.
