Team Notes: Bears Open League Play at Home Against No. 18 Colgate, Cornell

This Weekend: The Bears open the ECAC Hockey portion of their schedule with a pair of home games against Colgate and Cornell, the teams that Brown faced in the final weekend of the 2010-11 regular season. Last year, Brown earned a season sweep of both central New York teams, marking the first time ever that Brown posted a season sweep of both Colgate and Cornell in the same season. The games are the only League games to be played at Meehan Auditorium during the month of November, as the Bears host AIC on the 22nd in their only other home November contest. The Bears, who play seven of their 11 first semester games on the road, have only one other home date, the December 3rd contest against travel partner Yale. Brown will look to build on its season-opening weekend during which the Bears were edged by Dartmouth, 2-1, before earning a 3-2 win over Princeton on Saturday afternoon on the strength of 37 saves from senior goalie Mike Clemente and goals from sophomore Garnet Hathaway and freshmen Massimo Lamacchia and Ryan Jacobson. Brown travels to League rivals Union and RPI next weekend, before taking a break from ECAC Hockey action with three straight non-league contests.

All-Time in Home Openers: Since Brown's first season in 1897-98, the Bears are 36-40-6 in home opening games, after posting a 3-3 tie with Quinnipiac last season. Brown's last win in a home opener came at the start of the 2007-08 season when the Bears earned a 5-2 victory over Colgate on November 9th. In home opening games played at Meehan Auditorium, Brown is 21-25-4. Colgate has served as Brown's home opening opponent, six times (all since 1998), with Brown going 1-5-0 in those games.

These Dates Historically Speaking: All-time, Brown is 1-2-1 on November 4th, all of which have been played at home. Brown is 0-1-1 against Colgate on November 4th. In games played on November 5th, Brown is 1-3-1, including a 1-2-1 record at home. Against Cornell, Brown is 0-1-0.

Last Time Out: The Bears earned a weekend split at the Ivy Shootout, dropping a narrow, 2-1, decision to host Dartmouth, before rebounding on short rest with a 3-2 win over Princeton. Senior Jarred Smith scored the lone goal against the Big Green, while senior Mike Clemente recorded 19 saves. In the win over Princeton, Brown's second line accounted for all three goals, including a goal scored on a delayed penalty and then on the ensuing power play. Sophomore Garnet Hathaway led the Bears with three points (1g, 2a), while freshmen Massimo Lamacchia and Ryan Jacobson each posted a goal and an assist. Clemente earned the win with 37 saves.

Brown/Dunkin' Donuts Center to Host 2013 NCAA Regional: Brown will host the 2013 NCAA Men's Hockey East Regional at Providence's Dunkin' Donuts Center, marking the ninth NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament competition in Providence, but first since 2003. The Dunkin' Donuts Center, formerly known as the Providence Civic Center, has hosted the Frozen Four six times, and this will be the third time it has hosted regional competition. Game dates have not been finalized, but will be held between March 29-31, 2013. The regional winner earns a trip to the 2013 Frozen Four at the Consol Engery Center in Pittsburgh, PA (April 11-13).

Meehan Auditorium 50th Anniversary: The 2011-12 season will mark the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Brown's George V. Meehan Auditorium, which opened during the 1961-62 season. Brown will feature a special center-ice logo as well as a patch that will be sported on its home and away uniforms. The men's and women's teams will host a doubleheader on December 3, to celebrate the anniversary. The women will take on Princeton at 3:00, while the men face Yale at 7:00.

Multimedia: Brown is in its fifth year of a partnership with America One (previously B2 Networks) to handle all video and audio streaming needs. Video and audio, called by Mike Rubin '00, for all 12 of Brown's home games will be streamed live over the internet. In addition, five regular season away games will be shown live via America One. Cost to view the games is $8.00 per day or fans can purchase a hockey season pass (all Brown men's & women's games) for a fee of $75.00. Free audio for all home games and select away games will also be available. In addition to Brown's normal audio broadcasts on brownbears.com, five other games will also be broadcast on WPRV AM-790, beginning with this weekend's contests against Colgate and Cornell. Other games to air on WPRV AM-790 include both the home Yale and Princeton games and the Mayor's Cup game at Providence. Brendan Whittet '94: Brown alum Brendan Whittet, class of 1994, returns for his third season as Brown's bench boss. A 15-year veteran of the college coaching ranks, Whittet guided the Bears to one of their most successful seasons in recent history in his first season at the helm. Under Whittet's guidance, Brown won 13 games, the most since winning 16 during the 2004-05 season. The Bears improved in nearly every facet of their game offensively, while advancing to the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament for the first time since 2003. During the regular season last year, he helped lead the Bears to a 9th-place finish in the ECAC Hockey standings, Brown's highest finish since 2005. A former defenseman for the Bears, Whittet is the 15th head coach in the 111-year history of the Brown men's hockey program and the 4th Brown hockey alum to coach the team, joining Wescott E.S. Moulton '31 (1948-52), Donald F. Whiston '51 (1953-55), and J. Allan Soares '60 (1971-74).

Maclellan Named Pre-Season All-League: Senior Jack Maclellan was named Pre-Season All-ECAC Hockey in a vote by the 12 ECAC Head Coaches. A Second Team All-ECAC honoree a year ago, Maclellan is coming off a junior season in which he led Brown with 17 assists and 31 points, despite missing the last six games of the year with a foot injury.

Maclellan A Candidate for 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award: Senior Jack Maclellan was named a candidate for the 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Presented annually to the outstanding senior NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year across ten different sports, the acronym "CLASS" stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®. One of 20 candidates for the 2012 Men's Hockey Award, Maclellan is one of three senior student-athletes from the Ivy League and ECAC Hockey, joining Dartmouth's Doug Jones and Cornell's Keir Ross. The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot.
 
Brown vs. Colgate:  Friday night's game between the Raiders and the Bears marks the 76th meeting between the two teams in a series that began on March 8, 1935, a 1-0 Brown victory. Colgate leads the all-time series, 49-20-5. However, Brown has gone 4-3-3 in its last 10 games against the Raiders, including a season sweep last year with a 5-2 win in Hamilton and a 6-4 win in Providence. It was Brown's first season sweep against the Raiders since the 1992-1993 season and the pair of wins was  Brown's best season since earning three points in 2008-09. Senior Jack Maclellan leads all Brown players against Colgate with seven points (1g, 6a) in five career games, while junior Chris Zaires and senior Bobby Farnham have five points (1g, 4a) in four and six career games, respectively

Scouting Colgate: The Raiders are ranked #18 in the county in the current USCHO poll, having opened the 2011-12 season with a 4-2-1 record. Colgate is coming off a weekend split in a home-and-home series with Niagara, as the Raiders claimed a 7-6 overtime win on the road and dropped a 2-1 decision at home. The overtime win was the third straight overtime game for Colgate, which also defeated Miami, 3-2, and tied Army, 2-2. The Raiders are currently led by senior Austin Smith, who has 11 points (7g, 4a), while sophomore Chris Wagner adds 7 points (1g, 6a). Sophomore Erik Mihalik has seen the majority of time in net, and has posted a 3.69 GAA with a .862 save percentage in four games (243:42). Senior Alex Evin has played in three games (184:09) and has earned a 1.63 GAA with a .936 save percentage. 

Brown vs. Cornell:  Cornell leads the all-time series with Brown, which began with an 8-2 Brown win on February 21, 1959, by a 68-41-5 margin. The Big Red had earned a season sweep over the Bears in each of the past three seasons, but Brown reversed the trend by earning a season sweep of the Big Red last year with a pair of 3-2 wins. The victory in Ithaca snapped Cornell's seven-game winning streak over the Bears and marked Brown's first win since posting a 5-2 victory on 1/20/2007. The season sweep marked the first sweep of Cornell for Brown since the 1994-95 season and was Brown's best season against Cornell since 2003-2004, when the Bears earned three points against the Big Red. Senior Jarred Smith is Brown's statistical leader against Cornell with 4 career points (1g, 3a) in seven games, while sophomore Dennis Robertson and senior Jeff Buvinow each have three assists in two and six career games, respectively.

Scouting Cornell: After posting a pair of exhibition wins, the Big Red dropped a 5-4 decision to Mercyhurst in their 2011-12 season opener last Saturday. Freshman Joakim Ryan led the way for Cornell with 3 points (2g, 1a) en route to ECAC Rookie of the Week honors. Six other players had at least one point in the game, includng three players who all had a pair of assists. The other two goals were scored by senior Sean Collins and junior John Esposito. Sophomore Andy Iles played in net and stopped 14 of 19 shots.
