Brendan Whittet '94: Brown alum Brendan
Whittet, class of 1994, returns for his second season as Brown's
bench boss. A 15-year veteran of the college coaching ranks,
Whittet guided the Bears to one of their most successful seasons in
recent history in his first season at the helm. Under Whittet's
guidance, Brown won 13 games, the most since winning 16 during the
2004-05 season. The Bears improved in nearly every facet of their
game offensively, while advancing to the ECAC Hockey Championship
Tournament for the first time since 2003. A former defenseman for
the Bears, Whittet is the 15th head coach in the 111-year history
of the Brown men's hockey program and the 4th Brown hockey alum to
coach the team, joining Wescott E.S. Moulton '31 (1948-52), Donald
F. Whiston '51 (1953-55), and J. Allan Soares '60 (1971-74).
This Weekend: The Bears open their season in
the Ivy Showcase for the fourth straight season. After three years
with regular season non-league games between Yale, Princeton and
Brown and an exhibition game against Ontario Institute of
Technology, the three original teams will be joined by Ivy foe
Dartmouth this year. With the new format, all four teams will play
a pair of non-league games that count in the overall record, but
not in the ECAC Hockey or Ivy League standings. The Bears face host
Yale on Friday evening and will face either Dartmouth or Princeton
on Saturday at 4:00 depending upon the results of Friday's games.
Brown has opened its season in October just six other times in its
86 seasons. This year's October 29th start date is the earliest
since 2007 when Brown and Yale faced each other on October 27th in
the first Ivy Showcase.
All-Time in Season Openers: Since Brown's
first season in 1897-98, the Bears are 34-48-4 in season opening
games. Brown's last win in a season opener came at the start of the
2003-04 season when the Bears earned a 2-0 victory at Harvard on
November 1.
Last Time Out: The Bears were one of just
two teams in the country, joining National Champion Boston College,
to win their final game last season. Led by Dan Rosen '10, who made
21 saves to post a shutout, Brown claimed a 3-0 win over St.
Lawrence in the ECAC Hockey Third Place game. Aaron Volpatti
'10, Jesse
Fratkin '11, and Harry
Zolnierczyk '10 scored for Brown in its 13th win of the
year, which helped the Bears close the season with a .500 record
(13-13-3), after opening the season with an 0-7-1 record.
These Dates Historically Speaking: All-time,
Brown is 0-0-1 in games played on October 29th, having tied
Harvard, 2-2, in the 2004-05 season opener. In games played on
October 30th, Brown is 0-2-0 all-time, having lost to Harvard, 1-0,
in the 1999-00 season opener, and to Princeton, 1-0, in the 2009-10
season opener.
Brown vs. Yale: Yale leads the all-time
series with Brown, which dates back to the 1897-1898 season, by an
88-71-8 margin, including winning 12 of the last 14 games between
the two programs. In fact, dating back to a Brown win on 12/9/06,
the Bulldogs had won 11 straight contests, a streak that was
snapped last March when Brown earned a 3-2 win in game #1 of the
ECAC Quarterfinal series. The Bears would go on to win the series
with a 1-0 win in game #3, as Yale took the 2nd game, 6-3. Last
season, Brown was one of just three teams to score at least five
goals against Yale, joining RPI and St. Lawrence. However, Brown
scored five goals in both games against the Bulldogs, while the
Engineers and Saints accomplished it only once. JuniorJeff
Buvinow is Brown's statistical leader against the Bulldogs
with 8 points (1g, 7a) in 10 career games, while classmate Jack
Maclellan (9 games) and senior Harry Zolnierczyk (12
games) each add 7 career points (3g, 4a).
Brown vs. Yale in Season Opening
Games: All-time, Brown is 0-4-0 against Yale in
season opening games. When the two teams met in the 2007-08 season
opener, it marked the first time that Yale served as Brown's
opening game since the 1926-27 campaign.
Scouting Yale: The two-time defending ECAC
Hockey regular-season champion Yale opens its 2010-11 campaign
against the Bears. Yale and Dartmouth scrimmaged for 60 minutes on
Oct. 23. Ken Agostino, Gus Young, Antoine Laganiere, Broc Little,
and Chad Ziegler scored for the Bulldogs. Jeff Malcolm, Ryan
Rondeau, and Nick Maricic each had a period between the pipes and
combined to stop all but one shot.
Brown vs. Dartmouth: This weekend could mark
the 139th meeting in the rivalry between Brown and Dartmouth. The
Bears swept the season series from Dartmouth in 2007-08 (for the
first time since 1997-1998), but the Big Green earned the season
sweep in 2008-09 and earned three points last year with a 9-4 win
in Hanover and a 5-5 tie in Providence, as Dartmouth is 12-2-2
since February 22, 2003. The Big Green leads the all-time series,
which began on February 22, 1928 with a 15-0 Dartmouth victory, by
a 68-63-8 margin. Junior Jeff Buvinow is Brown's statistical leader
against Dartmouth with 1-4-5 totals in four career games, while
senior Harry Zolnierczyk (2g, 2a) and junior Jack Maclellan (1g,
3a) each have four points in five and four career games,
respectively.
Scouting Dartmouth: The Dartmouth men's
hockey team begins its 2010-11 campaign with a 4 p.m. game on
Friday against Princeton in the first contest of the Ivy Shootout.
The Big Green earned a 7-6 exhibition win over Trois Rivieres on
10/17 with Rob Smith and Kyle Reeds each scoring two goals.
Brown vs. Princeton: Should the Bears and
Tigers face each other on Saturday, this weekend would mark the
150th meeting all-time between the two teams. Brown holds a 79-62-8
advantage over Princeton in the all-time series, which dates back
to a 4-4 tie during the 1899-1900 season. The two teams played six
straight overtime games, with Brown posting a 1-2-3 record in those
contests, before Princeton earned a victory in regulation, 4-3, in
the final meeting between the two schools during the 2006-2007
season to clinch that year's ECAC First Round series. Following
that win, Princeton won six straight games to stretch its winning
streak over Brown to seven contests. Last year, Brown was 1-2-0
against Princeton, snapping the Tigers' winning streak with a 3-1
win in Providence on December 4. Junior Jack Maclellan is Brown's
statistical leader against the Tigers with five points (2g, 3a) in
six career games, while classmate Jeff Buvinow adds three points,
all assists, in six career games.
Scouting Princeton: Princeton comes into the
game with Dartmouth following a 7-1 exhibition victory over
Morrisville State, its second exhibition win this year. Will
MacDonald led the Tigers with four points against Morrisville,
while Kevin Lohry and Marc Hagel also scored. Goalie Sean Bonar
(40:00) picked up the victory with seven saves in relief of Alan
Reynolds (20:00), who made three saves.
