Brendan Whittet '94: Brown alum Brendan
Whittet, class of 1994, returns for his second season as Brown's
bench boss. A 15-year veteran of the college coaching ranks,
Whittet guided the Bears to one of their most successful seasons in
recent history in his first season at the helm. Under Whittet's
guidance, Brown won 13 games, the most since winning 16 during the
2004-05 season. The Bears improved in nearly every facet of their
game offensively, while advancing to the ECAC Hockey Championship
Tournament for the first time since 2003. A former defenseman for
the Bears, Whittet is the 15th head coach in the 111-year history
of the Brown men's hockey program and the 4th Brown hockey alum to
coach the team, joining Wescott E.S. Moulton '31 (1948-52), Donald
F. Whiston '51 (1953-55), and J. Allan Soares '60 (1971-74).
This Weekend: The Bears open a tough
four-game road stretch, during which Brown will play four games
away from Meehan in a span of nine days. In addition to the always
challenging ECAC Hockey trip to Hamilton and Ithaca, where Brown
has won just five (Colgate) and 13 (Cornell) games all-time, the
Bears will also face New Hampshire (currently ranked #7) and Boston
University (currently ranked #2) on the road in a pair of
non-league games next week. Coming off a weekend off, the Bears are
still in search of their first League win of the season, having
earned a single point two weeks ago with a 3-3 come-from-behind tie
with Quinnipiac. Brown has been hampered by injury during the early
going, but is expected to be at full-strength this weekend with the
return of junior Jarred
Smith, who was injured in the season opener at Yale, and
highly-regarded freshmanMarc-Antoine
Carrier, who has yet to debut.
Last Time Out: The Bears earned a single
point two weeks ago, coming back from a 3-1 deficit with a pair of
third-period goals to earn a 3-3 tie with Quinnipiac. The next
night against Princeton, Brown held a 2-0 first-period lead, but
the Tigers rallied, outscoring Brown, 4-1, the rest of the way to
earn the 4-3 win. The Bears were led by senior David
Brownschidle, who had two goals and an assist in the two
games, his first two games of the season, while
sophomore Chris
Zaires tallied three assists over the weekend.
Senior Harry
Zolnierczyk and junior Jack
Maclellan both had a goal and an assist over the weekend,
while freshmen Garnet
Hathaway and Mark
Hourihan both tallied a pair of assists for the first
points of their careers. Junior Mike
Clemente earned the tie on Friday with 29 saves, while
freshman Marco
De Filippo posted 30 saves in the loss to the Tigers.
These Dates Historically Speaking: All-time,
Brown is 1-5-0 in games played on November 19th, including an 0-4-0
record in away games. In games played on November 20th, Brown is
2-8-0 all-time, including a 2-6-0 record in away games. Brown has
faced Colgate and Cornell just one time on these dates, during the
1993-94 season, when head coach Brendan Whittet '94 was a senior on
the hockey team. The Bears dropped a 6-5 decision to Colgate, in
overtime, on Friday night, before earning a 7-3 win over Cornell on
Saturday night. Like this year, the games were played on the road
that season.
Brown vs. Colgate: Friday night's game
between the Raiders and the Bears marks the 74th meeting between
the two teams in a series that began on March 8, 1935, a 1-0 Brown
victory. Colgate leads the all-time series, 49-18-5. However,
Brown has gone 2-3-3 in its last eight games against the Raiders.
Last year, Colgate posted a season sweep over the Bears with a 5-3
win in Providence and a 6-2 win in Hamilton. Brown's last win over
the Raiders came on January 23, 2009 when the Bears posted a 4-1
victory, their first win in Hamilton since 2/19/93. Brown would
earn three points against Colgate in 2009 with a 3-3 tie in
Providence. Junior Jack Maclellan leads all Brown players against
Colgate with four points, all assists, in four games, while junior
Jarred Smith has two goals in four games. Junior Bobby
Farnham (4 games) and sophomore Chris Zaires (2 games)
each have two career assists.
Scouting Colgate: The Raiders enter the
weekend with Brown and Yale having dropped a pair of ECAC Hockey
games at home to Princeton (4-3) and Quinnipiac (3-1). The losses
were the second and third straight for Colgate, which also fell to
St. Lawrence (4-1) on November 6th, one day after tying Clarkson
(4-4). Senior Brian Day currently leads the Raiders with 7 points
(4g, 3a) in eight games, while junior Austin Smith (2g, 4a),
sophomore Robbie Bourdon (2g, 4a), and senior Francois Brisebois
(1g, 5a) each have six points in eight games. Junior Alex Evin has
seen the majority of time in net this year and has posted a 2.70
GAA with a .905 save percentage in seven games (422:36). Freshman
Eric Mihalik has played in one game (58:31) and has a 3.08 GAA with
a .889 save percentage.
Brown vs. Cornell: Cornell leads the
all-time series with Brown, which began with an 8-2 Brown win on
February 21, 1959, by a 68-39-5 margin. The Big Red have earned a
season sweep (including 6-0 and 5-3 wins last year) over the Bears
in each of the past three seasons. The Big Red extended their
current winning streak over Brown to seven games with a 3-0 win
over the Bears in the 2010 ECAC Hockey semifinals. Brown's last win
over Cornell came during the 2006-2007 season when the Bears
snapped Cornell's five-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory in
Ithaca. Brown posted its best year against Cornell in recent
history during 2003-2004, when the Bears earned three points
against the Big Red, claiming a 3-3 tie in Ithaca and a 2-1
overtime win in Providence. Sophomore Jeff
Buvinow is Brown's statistical leader against the Big Red
with three assists in five career games, while a trio of players,
senior David Brownschidle (6 games), junior Jarred Smith (5 games),
and sophomore Chris Zaires (3 games) each have one career goal.
Scouting Cornell: After opening the season
with three straight losses, Cornell has gone 2-1 in its previous
three games, with a 6-1 win over Clarkson, a 4-1 win over
Quinnipiac, and a 2-1 overtime loss to Princeton. Last Saturday
against the Tigers, it took an extra attacker goal by Mike Devin
with nine seconds left to force overtime, as a Princeton goal in
the 18th minute of play during the opening period nearly stood as
the game's only goal. The Tigers would prevail at the 2:35 mark of
overtime to close out their weekend sweep. Freshman Dustin Mowrey
currently leads the Big Red with five points (3g, 2a) in six games,
while five other players have tallied four points so far this year,
including sophomore Nick D'Agostino (5 games) and junior Locke
Jillson (6 games), who both have a pair of goals and a pair of
assists. Cornell's goaltending duties have been roughly split
between freshman Andy Iles and junior Mike Garman, who each have a
1-2-0 record. Iles has a 2.15 GAA and a .932 save percentage in
four games (194:56), while Garman has a 3.28 GAA and a .886 save
percentage in three games (164:29).
