Team Notes: Bears Face Cross-Town Rival Providence in 25th Annual Mayor's Cup
Tonight: The Bears close out the 2010
calendar year and the first half of their schedule tonight against
Providence, as the teams face off in the 25th annual Mayor's Cup
battle. Brown will look to snap its two game skid, after falling to
#13 Union (4-3) and #15 RPI (6-2) over the weekend. Tonight's game
against PC also marks the third game (out of the last five) against
teams from Hockey East, as Brown also played UNH and BU prior to
the Union-RPI weekend. Brown will be looking to avenge last year's
4-3 loss to the Friars this evening and is in search of its first
win in the Mayor's Cup series since a 2-1 win on November 26, 2006,
as Providence has claimed three straight games.
Last Time Out: The Bears stumbled against a pair of
ranked opponents last weekend, falling to #13 Union, 4-3, and to
#15 RPI, 6-2. Junior Jack
Maclellan led the Bears with 4 points (3g, 1a) in the two
games, with two points in each game. Sophomore Chris
Zaires and freshman Dennis
Robertson also had multiple points over the weekend, as
each posted one assist in both games. For Maclellan, he posted his
first career multi-goal game on Friday against Union, scoring one
short handed and one on the power play. Junior Mike
Clemente made 28 saves on Friday night against Union and
stopped 8 on Saturday against RPI, before getting relieved by
sophomore Anthony
Borelli, who recorded 11 saves.
Multimedia: Brown is in its fourth year of
a partnership with America One (previously B2 Networks) to handle
all video and audio streaming needs. Video and audio, called by
Mike Rubin '00, for all 12 of Brown's home games will be streamed
live over the internet. In addition, three away games will be shown
live via America One. Free audio for all home games and select away
games will also available. In addition to Brown's normal audio
broadcasts on brownbears.com, six other games will also be
broadcast on WPRV AM-790, including tonight's game against
Providence. Other remaining games to air on WPRV AM-790 include
both Harvard games and the home game against Yale. Video for single

Brendan Whittet '94: Brown alum Brendan
Whittet, class of 1994, returns for his second season as Brown's
bench boss. A 15-year veteran of the college coaching ranks,
Whittet guided the Bears to one of their most successful seasons in
recent history in his first season at the helm. Under Whittet's
guidance, Brown won 13 games, the most since winning 16 during the
2004-05 season. The Bears improved in nearly every facet of their
game offensively, while advancing to the ECAC Hockey Championship
Tournament for the first time since 2003. A former defenseman for
the Bears, Whittet is the 15th head coach in the 111-year history
of the Brown men's hockey program and the 4th Brown hockey alum to
coach the team, joining Wescott E.S. Moulton '31 (1948-52), Donald
F. Whiston '51 (1953-55), and J. Allan Soares '60 (1971-74).
Mike Clemente Named ECAC Hockey/MLX Skates Goalie of the
Week: In Brown's weekend sweep at Colgate and
Cornell, Clemente posted 48 saves, a .923 save percentage, and a
2.00 GAA, while allowing only one even-strength goal. Clemente
helped lead Brown to its first road sweep over the central-New York
duo since 2/93, its first win over Cornell since 1/07, and its
first regular season road sweep since 1/05. He recorded 28
saves on Friday against the Raiders with 20 the next night against
the Big Red.
This Date Historically Speaking: All time,
Brown has played 18 total games on December 7th and has posted a
6-11-1 record. The Bears are 1-5-1 in home games played on December
7th and 4-5-0 in away games played on this date. The Bears are
1-1-0 in neutral site games on December 7th. Brown and Providence
have never met on December 7th. The last time Brown played on 12/7
was in 2005 when the Bears dropped a 2-1 decision to Maine in a
neutral site game played in Portland.
Brown vs. Providence: Brown and Providence
have met 89 times, with Providence leading the all-time series,
44-43-2, after winning three straight games. On March 1, 1927,
Brown defeated the Friars, 3-1, at the Rhode Island Auditorium in
the first meeting between the two schools, Rhode Island's only
Division I hockey teams. The two teams had alternated wins for four
seasons, until Providence claimed three straight victories with an
8-0 win in 2007-08 and a 4-3 win in each of the last two years.
Brown's last win in the series came in 2006-07, when the Bears
pulled out a 2-1 victory at Meehan Auditorium. Although the
all-time series between the two programs is close, Providence holds
a 14-8-2 lead in the Mayor's Cup series. There have only been five
overtime games in the all-time series, with four of the five, and
the only two ties, coming in Mayor's Cup games. Brown is 2-1-2 in
overtime contests against the Friars.
Scouting Providence: The Friars are coming
off a 5-0 loss to Maine, picking up one point on the weekend
against the Black Bears with a 3-3 tie on Friday night. After
opening the season with a 1-4-0 record in its first five games,
Providence was 4-0-3 in its next seven, before dropping a 5-0
decision at Northeastern. Since the loss to the Huskies, Providence
has gone 1-1-1 with a non-league win over Holy Cross on November
27th. Senior Kyle MacKinnon currently leads Providence
with 15 points (10g, 5a), including two power play goals, while
senior Ian O'Connor has 13 points (3g, 10a) and sophomore Tim
Schaller adds 10 (3g, 7a). 10 other players have scored at least
one goal this season, while an additional six players have posted
at least one point. Junior Alex Beaudry had seen the majority of
time in net this year and has posted a 3.03 GAA and a .904 save
percentage in 15 games (5-6-4). Junior Justin Gates has appeared in
three games (1-0-0) and has a 2.29 GAA with a .922 save
percentage.
