Team Notes: Bears Welcome Quinnipiac and Princeton to Meehan
Multimedia: Brown is in its fourth year of a partnership with America One (previously B2 Networks) to handle all video and audio streaming needs. Video and audio, called by Mike Rubin '00, for all 12 of Brown's home games will be streamed live over the internet. In addition, three away games will be shown live via America One. Free audio for all home games and select away games will also available. In addition to Brown's normal audio broadcasts on brownbears.com, six other games will also be broadcast on WPRV AM-790, beginning with this Saturday's contest against Princeton. Other games to air on WPRV AM-790 include both Harvard games, the home game against Yale, and non-league games against UNH and Providence. Video for single games can be purchased for $7, or fans can buy a season-long hockey pass (all men's & women's games) for $75. Brendan Whittet '94: Brown alum Brendan
Whittet, class of 1994, returns for his second season as Brown's
bench boss. A 15-year veteran of the college coaching ranks,
Whittet guided the Bears to one of their most successful seasons in
recent history in his first season at the helm. Under Whittet's
guidance, Brown won 13 games, the most since winning 16 during the
2004-05 season. The Bears improved in nearly every facet of their
game offensively, while advancing to the ECAC Hockey Championship
Tournament for the first time since 2003. A former defenseman for
the Bears, Whittet is the 15th head coach in the 111-year history
of the Brown men's hockey program and the 4th Brown hockey alum to
coach the team, joining Wescott E.S. Moulton '31 (1948-52), Donald
F. Whiston '51 (1953-55), and J. Allan Soares '60 (1971-74).
This Weekend: The Bears open the ECAC Hockey
portion of their schedule with a pair of home games against
Quinnipiac and Princeton, the only two games to be played at Meehan
Auditorium during the month of November. Brown will look to build
on its season-opening weekend during which the Bears posted a 2-1
victory over Princeton on Saturday afternoon on the strength of 28
saves from rookie goalie Marco
De Filippo and goals from senior Jesse
Fratkin and junior Jack
Maclellan. Brown has a rare weekend off next weekend and
then will hit the road for what will be a challenging four-game
stretch to close out the month of November. The Bears face Colgate
and Cornell in New York on November 19-20 and then face New
Hampshire and Boston University in a pair of non-league games, both
on the road, during the week of Thanksgiving.
All-Time in Home Openers: Since Brown's first
season in 1897-98, the Bears are 36-40-5 in home opening games.
Brown's last win in a home opener came at the start of the 2007-08
season when the Bears earned a 5-2 victory over Colgate on November
9th. In home opening games played at Meehan Auditorium, Brown is
21-25-3. Quinnipiac has never served as Brown's home opening
opponent.

Whittet's Home Openers (0-1): 11/13/09 vs.
Colgate (L, 5-3)
Last Time Out: The Bears earned a split last
weekend at the Ivy Showcase at Yale, falling to the host Bulldogs,
7-4, on Friday, and earning a 2-1 win over Princeton on Saturday.
All games count in Brown's overall record, but do not count towards
ECAC or Ivy League standings. Brown was led by junior Jack
Maclellan, who had four points (1g, 3a) in the two games, including
a career-high three assists against Yale and the game-winning goal
against Princeton. Senior Harry
Zolnierczyk had a three-point weekend (1g, 2a), while
freshman Dennis
Robertson led Brown with two goals. Senior Jesse Fratkin
and junior Jeff
Buvinow also had a pair of points over the weekend with
a goal and an assist, while freshman Jake
Goldberg earned his first career point with an assist on
Robertson's first career goal against Yale. In addition to
Robertson and Goldberg, six other members of the class of 2014 made
their collegiate debuts, including defenseman Matt
Wahl, forwards Mike
Borge, Garnet
Hathaway, Mark
Hourihan, and Jimmy
Siers, and goalie Marco De Filippo, who made 28 saves on
29 shots in Brown's win over Princeton.
These Dates Historically Speaking: All-time,
Brown is 1-3-0 in games played on November 5th, including a 1-2-0
record at home. In games played on November 6th, Brown is 1-2-1
all-time, including an 0-1-0 record in games played at home.
Brown vs. Quinnipiac: Brown and Quinnipiac split
the season last year with each team winning at home. The Bears
claimed a 2-1 victory in Providence, while the Bobcats earned an
8-3 win in Hamden, marking the second straight year that the two
teams split the season series. Quinnipiac leads the all-time series
with Brown by an 8-4-0 margin. The Bears and the Bobcats met for
the first time at Quinnipiac in January of 2006 with Quinnipiac
claiming a 3-2 win in overtime. Brown earned the season split with
the Bobcats in 2006, with a 5-3 win in Providence to close out the
regular season. The two teams split the season series again in
2006-07, with each team winning in its home rink for the second
straight year, before the Bobcats would win four straight games,
two of which were in the ECAC playoffs, during the 2007-08 season.
Seniors David
Brownschidle (2g, 1a) and Jeremy
Russell (1g, 2a) lead all Brown players against
Quinnipiac with 3 career points in eight and six career games,
respectively. Classmate Harry Zolnierczyk adds 2 points (1g, 1a)
assists in 6 career games.
Scouting Quinnipiac: The Bobcats enter the Brown
game following a 5-2 loss at St. Cloud State, which snapped a
three-game winning streak. After opening the season with a series
split with Ohio State (W, 2-1/L, 4-0), Quinnipiac went on to win
three in a row with victories over Bentley (3-2), Holy Cross (3-1),
and St. Cloud State (4-2). The Bobcats are led by freshman Kellen
Jones, who has 6 points (3g, 3a) in six games, while junior Yuri
Bouharevich and freshman Connor Jones each have five points on one
goal and four assists. Seven other players have scored at least one
goal, while an additional seven have posted at least one point on
the young season. Junior Dan Clarke has seen the majority of
time in net for Quinnipiac and has posted a 2.61 GAA with a .902
save percentage in five games (3-2-0). Sophomore Eric Hartzell has
played in one game, the Bobcats' win over St. Cloud, allowing two
goals on 23 shots.
Brown vs. Princeton: The Bears have
already faced the Tigers this season, winning a non-league game
against Princeton, 2-1, last Saturday as part of the Ivy Showcase
in the 150th meeting all-time between the two programs. Brown holds
an 80-62-8 advantage over Princeton in the all-time series, which
dates back to a 4-4 tie during the 1899-1900 season. The two teams
played six straight overtime games, with Brown posting a 1-2-3
record in those contests, before Princeton earned a victory in
regulation, 4-3, in the final meeting between the two schools
during the 2006-2007 season to clinch that year's ECAC First Round
series. Following that win, Princeton won six straight games to
stretch its winning streak over Brown to seven contests. The Bears
snapped the Tigers' winning streak at eight games with a 3-1
victory in Providence on December 4, 2009, as Brown is 2-2-0
against the Tigers under head coach Brendan Whittet. Junior Jack
Maclellan is Brown's statistical leader against the Tigers with six
points (3g, 3a) in seven career games, including scoring the
game-winning goal last Saturday. Senior Jesse Fratkin has three
points (2g, 1a), including a goal last Saturday, in seven career
games, while junior Jeff Buvinow adds three assists in seven career
games.
Scouting Princeton: Princeton dropped a pair of
2-1 decisions last weekend at the Ivy Shootout at Yale to open the
season. Princeton fell to Dartmouth on Friday and Brown on
Saturday. Matt Arhontas scored both of Princeton's goals, evening
the opening game at 1-1 before Dartmouth scored in the third
period, and giving Princeton an early 1-0 lead in the second game.
In both games, the Tigers surrendered an early third period goal
that proved to be the game winner. Freshman Andrew Calof assisted
on both of the goals for his first two collegiate points. In total,
eight Princeton freshmen made their college debuts over the
weekend, including goaltender Sean Bonar, who made 27 saves in the
loss to Dartmouth. Mike Kramer and Derrick Pallis also had assists
over the weekend.
