Team Notes: Brown Battles Providence in 24th Annual Mayor’s Cup

The following article appeared November 17 on the Brown Web site.

Brown travels across town to face Providence in the 24th annual battle for the Mayor’s Cup. The Bears will look to avenge last year’s 4-3 loss to the Friars and reclaim the Cup for the first time since the 2006-07 season when Brown earned a 2-1 victory. The last time Brown played at Schneider, PC earned an 8-0 win. The game marks a homecoming of sorts, as current Brown assistant coach Jerry Keefe is a 2000 graduate of Providence.

Last Time Out: The Bears dropped both games of an ECAC weekend with Colgate (L, 5-3) and #3 Cornell (L, 6-0). On Friday night, Brown’s home opener, the Raiders stormed out to a 2-0 first-period lead. After a scoreless second period, Colgate scored on its first three shots of the third period to open up a 5-0 score. Senior Jordan Pietrus began a come-back attempt for Brown, scoring his first of the season on the power play at 5:40. Then, senior Aaron Volpatti made it a 5-2 game at 8:50 and Pietrus followed with his second of the night 12 seconds later for the 5-3 final. Saturday was a similar story, as Cornell held a 2-0 lead after the first period. Another scoreless second gave way to a four-goal third for the Big Red, including three goals in the game’s final three minutes.

Coming Up: The Bears return home this Saturday to host Yale in a 7:30 p.m. ECAC contest. The game marks the beginning of a three-game homestand, as Brown will also host Bentley and UConn in a pair of non-league games during Thanksgiving week. After a single game at Harvard on December 1st, the Bears return to Meehan to close out the calendar year with three straight home games.
