Yann Danis, who went from being a competent backup to José Theodore to being redundant in Hamilton, is hoping he has a new lease on his National Hockey League career.

Danis signed with the New York Islanders during the offseason because he thought he would get a chance to play at some point. The Islanders' No. 1 goaltender, Rick DiPietro, was coming off hip and knee surgeries and his backup, Joey MacDonald, is a journeyman with little NHL experience.

The Islanders called up Danis from their American Hockey League farm club in Bridgeport, Ct., this week after placing DiPietro on injured reserve. While the exact nature and extent of DiPietro's injury is clouded in mystery, he won't be dressed for the Canadiens game tonight.
