Paul Stewart
Director of Officiating
One of the most successful and respected individuals in hockey,
Paul Stewart serves as Director of Officials for ECAC Hockey.
Stewart assumed the role in July 2007.
Stewart served as an on-ice referee from 1983 through 2003,
including 17 years in the National Hockey League (NHL),
where, in 2003, he became the first American-born official to
referee 1,000 NHL games. After his retirement as an active
on-ice official in 2003, Stewart served as supervisor/coach of the
NHL Officials Development Program, observing young officials in
more than 200 NHL/American Hockey League contests.
In addition to his officiating experience, Stewart has a wealth of experience as a player. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Stewart competed in the ECAC from 1973-75 and then enjoyed a professional career that included the NHL and World Hockey Association (WHA) including affiliated minor leagues spanning 1975 through 1983.
Stewart assumes the leadership role of an officiating staff that comprised more than 40 individuals in 2006-07.
Bill Stewart
Senior Supervisor of Officiating Development
Bill Stewart serves as Men's Senior Supervisor of Officiating Development for ECAC Hockey. He works closely with the Director of Officiating on all officiating issues.
Stewart's duties include, but are not limited to, overseeing the development of ECAC Hockey officials, coordination of the conference's observer program, and assisting with evaluation of game performance of officials.
Stewart has been an official on several levels, including the collegiate and high school levels. Over the course of 28 years, Stewart officiated 572 college games and more than 2,000 high school contests before retiring in 2004. During the years 1989-1991, Stewart served as President of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association.
