Colgate Edges Engineers in Game 1

Colgate Edges Engineers in Game 1

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior Hunter Racine scored the eventual game-winning goal midway through the second period to help the Colgate University men's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at Class of '65 Arena. With the win, the Raiders improve to 15-14-6 and take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three ECAC Hockey First Round series. The Engineers drop to 5-26-4.

Racine (Ottawa, ON/Hawkesbury Hawks) received an outlet pass from classmate Willie Brooks (Locust, NJ/Carleton Place Canadiens) and converted on a breakaway to give the hosts a 2-1 lead at 10:48 of the second period. Breaking into the zone on the right side, he snapped a shot just inside the left post for his fourth goal of the year.

The Engineers had a minute and a half of 4-on-3 power play time later in the stanza, but were unable to equalize, despite outshooting the Raiders 11-5 in the middle period.

Freshman goaltender Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC/Trail Smoke Eaters) came up with a pair of big saves early in the frame to keep RPI within 2-1. At the other end, Colgate sophomore Colton Point (North Bay, ON/Carleton Place Canadiens) stopped all seven shots he faced in the third for a total of 26 in the game.

RPI pulled Marshall for an extra-attacker with just under two minutes to go, generating a handful of chances in front of Point, but he was able to keep them out.

Colgate senior Mike Panowyk (Whitby, ON/Whitby Fury) picked up an empty-netter with four seconds to play. His ninth goal of the year drew a lone assist from sophomore Paul Meyer (Edina, MN/Alberni Valley Bulldogs).

The Raiders opened the scoring at 6:14 of the first period, when freshman blueliner Trevor Cosgrove (Exeter, NH/Albernie Valley Bulldogs) ripped a shot into the top right corner of the net from the top of the right circle. The goal game just as 4-on-3 man advantage was expiring. Assists on Cosgrove's fifth of the season went to classmate Nick Austin (St. Louis Park, MN/Madison Capitals) and sophomore Jared Cockrell (Readfield, ME/Brooks Bandits).

RPI tied the game just 19 seconds into the second on freshman Donovan Ott's (Lebanon, PA/Johnstown Tomahawks) third goal of the year. Senior Mike Prapavessis (Oakville, ON/Toronto Patriots) fed a pass from behind the net to Ott, who buried a shot from close range.

Junior Evan Tironese (Qualicum Beach, BC/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) nearly scored moments earlier, as he took the opening faceoff directly up the middle of the ice, but he wasn't able to beat Point on the deke.

The Engineers finished with a 27-25 edge in shots, but went 0 for 3 on the power play. The Raiders, who won the faceoff battle 40-24, were 1 for 3 on the man advantage. Point (14-9-5) made 10 of his 26 saves in the second period, while Marshall (4-19-2) had nine of his 22 stops in the third.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow night for Game 2 of the series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
