Weekly Release: An Array of Finishes
ALBANY, N.Y. - A typically holiday break college hockey schedule
featured all of the excitement of tournament play and highlighted
non-league clashes for ECAC Hockey teams. The hockey action
provided fans with shootouts, offensive outbursts, and its share of
close finishes.
Harvard 4 at No. 18 North Dakota 4 (ot) & At No. 18
North Dakota 7, Harvard 3
*Alex Killorn scored a goal and assisted on two others, including
Marshall Everson's tying tally, as the Crimson rallied from a
two-goal, third-period deficit to tie No. 18 North Dakota. Steve
Michalek made 33 saves, four in overtime, to help extend the
Crimson's unbeaten streak to five games.
*North Dakota took control with four straight goals in the first
period and ended the Harvard five-game unbeaten streak by a 7-3
score Saturday night at Engelstad Arena.
At No. 11/12 Colgate 5, Canisius 2
*Colgate got two goals and an assist from Robbie Bourdon, while
Austin Smith extended his point streak to nine games with a goal
and two assists for three points. The Raiders now have a seven-game
unbeaten streak for the first time since 1999-2000.
Massachusetts 5 vs. No. 13/13 Cornell 2 & No. 13/13
Cornell 5 vs. Clarkson 3
*Conor Sheary scored a pair of power-play goals and Steven Guzzo
netted the third-period game-winner as UMass defeated Cornell 5-2
Thursday night in the Florida College Hockey Classic. Sean Collins
and the line of Greg Miller, Brian Ferlin and John Esposito had a
goal and an assist apiece, and junior defenseman Braden Birch
notched his first two points of the season in the form of a pair of
assists for the Big Red in the win over the Golden Knights. It was
the Big Red's first win at the event since it captured the
championship in 2008, snapping a five-game losing streak at Germain
Arena.
Maine 6 vs. Clarkson 1
*Playing without the services of standout senior goaltender Paul
Karpowich miss the trip to Florida due to an illness, Clarkson fell
to Maine, 6-1 in the opening round of the Florida College Hockey
Classic. The Black Bears outshot the Golden Knights 36-19 and went
2-of-7 on the power-play, while the Green and Gold were 0-of-7 with
the man-advantage.
Quinnipiac 2 at Nebraska Omaha 2 (ot) & At Nebraska
Omaha 4, Quinnipiac 1
*Eric Hartzell had his second-straight 30-save outing, stopping
34-of-36 shots on goal by the Mavericks. It was also Hartzell's
ninth consecutive start in which the junior goalie held the
Bobcats' opponent to two or fewer goals. Russell Goodman and Yuri
Bouharevich scored for Quinnipiac.
*Quinnipiac lost to Nebraska Omaha, 4-1, in the final game of its
two-game series at CenturyLink Center Omaha. The Bobcats' loss
snapped a six-game unbeaten streak, in which Quinnipiac was 4-0-2,
for the third longest streak in NCAA Division I hockey.
At Dartmouth 3, Holy Cross 2
*Dartmouth men's hockey team earned the milestone of the 1,000th
victory in program history Friday night against Holy Cross, 3-2, in
the second game of the 2011 Ledyard Classic. Doug Jones and Tyler
Sikura scored third period goals :22 seconds apart for the Big
Green.
Princeton 3 vs. Northeastern 3 (ot)
&âPrinceton 3 vs. Niagara 3 (ot)
*Princeton and Northeastern skated to a 3-3 overtime tie in first
semifinal bout of the Mariucci Classic with the Huskies eventually
skating to the finals after Justin Daniels ended a shootout in the
eighth round. Northeastern had a 41-26 advantage in shots and was
0-for-7 on the power-play. Princeton was 3-for-8 on the
power-play.
*Seniors Marc Hagel and Derrick Pallis had two points apiece as the
Tigers skated to a 3-3 tie with Niagara in the consolation game of
the Mariucci Classic at the University of Minnesota Saturday, Dec.
31.
Brown 5 at New Hampshire 2 & Brown 5 at Providence

*Marco De Filippo recorded 39 saves, including 18 in the third
period, to backbone Brown Friday night's 5-2 non-conference victory
against the New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center.
*Brown erased an early 2-0 deficit, scoring five unanswered goals
to earn a 5-2 win over Providence in the 26th Annual Mayor's Cup
battle Sunday afternoon at PC's Schneider Arena. After dropping a
pair of 4-3 decisions in 2008-09 & 2009-10, and posting a 4-4
tie last season, the win also gives the six members of Brown's
Class of 2012 its first career win over Providence.
At No. 15/15 Denver 3, No. 10/10 Union 1 & At No. 5/6
Colorado College 2, No. 10/10 Union 1
*Union surrendered three goals in the first 11:47 of the first
period, including two on the power-play and Denver held on to beat
the Dutchmen, 3-1. Jeremy Welsh scored his team leading 13th goal
in the opening period with Union on the power-play, who outshot the
Pioneers 43-28.
*Junior forward Wayne Simpson scored in the final minute of in the
third period, but Union fell 2-1 to Colorado College in front of
5,882 fans at World Arena. Sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick made
22 saves on 24 shots, while Josh Thorimbert stopped 20 of 21 shots
for Colorado College.
No. 17 UMass Lowell 7 vs. Rensselaer 2
&âArmy 3 vs. Rensselaer 2
*Senior David Vallorani scored a goal and two assists to surpass
100 career points as UMass Lowell hockey raced to a 7-2 victory
over Rensselaer in the opening round of the Toyota UConn Holiday
Classic. Army halted an eight-game winless stretch with two
power-play goals and some late game heroics from Brian Schultz who
scored the game-winning goal to down RPI, 3-2 in the consolation
game.
St. Lawrence 6 vs. No. 7/7 Merrimack 6 (ot) & St.
Lawrence 2 at Dartmouth 2 (ot)
*Kyle Flanagan and George Hughes combined for three goals and three
assists in their return to action following injury as St. Lawrence
advanced to the championship game of the Ledyard Bank Classic at
Dartmouth College with a nine-round shootout win after skating to a
6-6 tie with nationally seventh-ranked Merrimack in the tournament
opener Friday night.
*Tournament MVP Kyle Flanagan scored both Saints goals in
Saturday's 2-2 championship game tie, completing a six-point
weekend.
At No. 19 Yale 9, Bentley 3
*Yale rang in the New Year by ringing up nine goals, thanks in part
to a four-goal outburst by Brian O'Neill in a 9-3 win in the
first-ever meeting with Bentley. Yale scored twice on four
advantages while blanking Bentley on five attempts. The Bulldogs
completed their non-conference schedule with a 3-3-1 mark.
