Weekend Update: Defenses Flex Muscles

ALBANY, N.Y. - The trend of strong goaltending and resilient defenses in ECAC Hockey play is continuing this year with last night’s performances being no exception. Defenses on the winning end only allowed a total of four goals, including one shutout win in the four league match-ups.

Dartmouth 3 at St. Lawrence 1
*Senior goaltender Jody O'Neill picked up his first win of the season in his first start, making 20 saves for the Big Green.
*Dartmouth’s win was the fifth straight over St. Lawrence for the Big Green, dating back three seasons.
*The loss snapped a three-game St. Lawrence ECAC Hockey win streak and brought the Big Green, now 4-3-0 overall and 3-2-0 in league play into a tie in the league standings with the Saints, 3-6-0, 3-2-0.
*The Big Green were 1-for-3 on the power-play, while the Saints went 1-for-2 in a relatively penalty-free contest.

At No. 17 Colgate 3 at Quinnipiac 1
*Senior forward Austin Smith tallied his second career hat-trick to lead Colgate to a 3-1 win over Quinnipiac. He now leads the nation averaging 1.08 goals per game.
*Colgate is perfect 6-0-0 when leading after two periods this season.
*Connor Jones scored the Bobcats only goal of the game with assists going to John Dunbar and Kellen Jones.
*Colgate did not allow a power-play goal for the fifth time this year and the Raiders are 4-0-1 in those games.

Harvard 3 at Clarkson 2
*Junior defenseman Danny Biega scored the tie-breaking goal in the third period to give Harvard a 3-2 win at Clarkson in the Crimson's first road game of the season.
*With the loss Clarkson is now winless in its last four games (0-3-1), drops to 6-4-3 overall and to 1-3-1 in ECAC Hockey.
*Clarkson out shot Harvard 32-27. Paul Karpowich finished with 24 saves for Clarkson. Steve Michalek posted 30 stops for the Crimson.
*Clarkson finished 1-for-7 on the power-play, while Harvard was 1 for 9. The Golden Knights owned a 32-27 shots advantage.

At No. 18 Cornell 4, Princeton 0
*Sophomore goalie Andy Iles made 15 saves for his first collegiate shutout to backbone Cornell to a 4-0 victory over Princeton.
*Both teams struggled on the power-play on the night, going a combined 0-for-9.
*Freshmen Brian Ferlin and Joakim Ryan each scored their fourth goal of the season last night for the Big Red.
*The Tigers are 0-2-1 when being outshot this season.
