Golden Knights Get Back on Winning Track by Beating Dartmouth
Senior Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) made 37 saves and
classmate Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY) recorded his first career
two-goal game as the Clarkson University Hockey team broke out of a
four-game winless skid (0-3-1) with a 4-0 ECAC Hockey victory over
Dartmouth College before 2,136 fans at Cheel Arena on Saturday
night.
Sophomore Allan McPherson (Kinburn, ONT) and junior Adam Pawlick
(Utica, NY) also scored in the win, helping the Green and Gold to
their first victory since November 4. Clarkson, which lost to
harvard 3-2 on Friday, improves its record to 7-4-3 overall and to
2-3-1 in the conference.
Dartmouth (4-4, 3-3) outshot the Knights 37-31, but Karpowich was
on top of his game once again in the Clarkson crease making 16
first-period stops, seven saves in the middle stanza and 14 more in
the final frame for his third shutout of the season and fifth
career whitewash.
The teams set the tone for a fast-paced first period as Dartmouth
opened the game with three quick shots on goal in the first 27
seconds. The Knights followed with three of their own immediately
after for a six-shot total on the scoreboard before the game was
two minutes old. Clarkson outshot the visitors 17-16 in the
stanza.
Strong work along the left boards led to Clarkson’s opening
goal. Junior defenseman Nik Pokulok (Vaudreuil-Dorion, QUE) and
senior Corey Tamblyn (Bobcaygeon, ONT) freed up the puck along the
wall and fed a pass to Morley in the circle. The Knights’
captain then snapped off a quick low shot past Big Green goaltender
Jody O’Neill at 9:23 for his first goal of the season, giving
the Green and Gold the opening lead in a game for the first time in
seven contests.
Clarkson made it 2-0 early in the second period when McPherson
finished off a rush with senior linemates Nick Tremblay (Candiac,
QUE) and Louke Oakley (Whitby, ONT). McPherson fired off a hard
shot from the slot at 1:41 for his fifth goal of the year.
Clarkson closed out its sixth win at home this season with two more
goals in the third. Morley made it 3-0 when he deflected in a shot
from the point by senior defenseman James Howden (Edgeley, SASK) at
10:35. Pokulok collected his second assist of the game on the
goal.
With 54 seconds remaining, Pawlick scored into an empty net on a
shot from the neutral zone. Tamblyn also picked up his second
assist of the night.
Both teams were 0-of-5 on the power play. O’Neill made 27
saves for Dartmouth.
Clarkson breaks from ECAC Hockey play next weekend with non-league
game against Maine in Portland on Saturday and at Holy Cross on
Sunday.
