POTSDAM, NY – Sam Labrecque’s shot from the point on
a power play in overtime sailed through traffic and found the net
at 3:59 to give the Clarkson men’s hockey team a 5-4 win over
Yale before 1,850 at Cheel Arena this afternoon.
The Golden Knights (10-10-5, 4-4-3 ECAC), who scored three times on
five power plays, started and finished OT with an advantage to send
the Bulldogs (8-7-2, 5-4-1) back to New Haven with one point on the
weekend. A controversial Bulldog bench minor led to
Labrecque’s winner.
The Elis had the advantage in shots (42-28), but could only find
the net on one of six power plays. Four different Bulldogs scored
and helped the visitors to a pair of two-goal leads that evaporated
quickly.
Yale’s highly ranked power play was limited to just one tally
last night at Canton, but the Bulldogs banged home their first
attempt at Clarkson midway through the opening frame. Tommy Fallen
(Plymouth, Minn.) intercepted a clearing pass and unleashed a slap
shot from the point for his third goal.
Antoine Laganiere (Ile Cadieux, Que.) used a turnover in the home
end to up Yale’s lead to 2-0 at 11:51 of the first. He
grabbed the puck on the right side, zipped around a defender and
cut to the top of the crease before flicking it past Paul Karpowich
(38 saves). The junior forward deposited his seventh tally this
season.
The lead could have been bigger for the visitors, but Karpowich
snatched a few shots out of the air, including quality chances from
Andrew Miller (2 assists) and Brian O’Neill (3 points).
Jeff Malcolm (Lethbridge, Alb.), who had 23 saves, kept the Knights
off the board in the first 20 minutes by making two tough saves
against Matt and Joe Zarbo.
Clarkson scored three times during a four-goal second period.
A pass to Labrecque bounced off his skate and slipped past Malcolm
early in the frame to cut the margin in half.
Clinton Bourbonais (Dexter, Mich.), who scored late in last
night’s game to get Yale the tie, got his second of the
weekend to give the Blue a 3-1 lead at 14:44 of the second.
Consecutive Yale penalties late in the second gave Clarkson a
Golden opportunity to tie it. The home team used a timeout to
organize before finding the net up two players and then again on
the 5-on-4. Ben Sexton walked in from the point and blasted a low
shot.
Sexton got off errant shot almost a minute later, but this sailed
high and bounced off the glass. The puck bounced back to Luke
Oakley, who smacked it into the back of the net with 20 seconds
left in the frame.
The Knights took advantage of a break to grab its first lead less
than two minutes into the third. Yale defenseman Colin Dueck
(Calgary, Alb.) fell after getting caught up with the Clarkson
forward. That enabled Oakley to zip in from the left side and hit
the net to make it 4-3.
Dueck, who would figure prominently in this one, got revenge almost
a minute later when he blasted a slap shot from the point.
O’Neill got his stick on the shot and sent it past Karpowich
at 2:48 to even things at 4-4.
The visitors had numerous chances, including a pair of power plays,
to get the deciding goal but the Clarkson goalie came up big too
often. The home guys got another break with less than two
minutes left when Dueck was whistled for interference. The Knights
couldn’t get one past Malcolm during an advantage that ran
into the extra session, but they would get another chance to end it
on the power play.
Both teams seemed frustrated with the way the game was officiated,
but one of the referees needed “thicker skin,”
especially in overtime. Early in the extra session, the Yale bench
was penalized for a comment and the Knights immediately ended it at
the 3:59 mark.
BULLDOG BITES: The Blue overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a
tie last night at SLU... Yale used the same lineup as Saturday
night… Both teams were off Friday because of the snow storm
and played to OT ties on Saturday… The Bulldogs are home
this weekend to host Union and RPI at Ingalls Rink.
