Engineers Edged by Visiting Clarkson
TROY, N.Y. – Senior Nick Tremblay broke a 2-2 tie midway
through the third period and the Clarkson University
men’s hockey team held on for a, 3-2, victory over
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in front of 4,346 at
the Houston Field House. With the win, the Golden Knights
improve to 12-11-5 overall (6-5-3 ECAC Hockey), while the
Engineers fall to 7-18-1 (4-9-1 ECAC Hockey).
Tremblay (Candiac, PQ/Smiths Falls Bears) carried the puck up
the right wing boards before making a move in the slot. He
then ripped a shot into the top left corner of the net at
13:05 of the third period. The tally, which was his 13th goal
of the season, was assisted by senior Luke Oakley (Whitby,
ON/St. Michael’s Buzzers) and sophomore Chase Fuchs
(Severna Park, MD/Syracuse Stars).
The Golden Knights opened the scoring at 2:38 of the opening
stanza, when sophomore defenseman Alex Boak (Norwood,
NY/Brockville Braves) threw a shot through traffic and past
RPI junior netminder Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, PA/Topeka
RoadRunners) for his first goal of the year. Assists went to
senior Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY/Northwood) and senior Corey
Tamblyn (Bobcaygeon, ON/Markham Waxers).
Clarkson made it 2-0 at 11:03 of the first, on a power-play goal
by Morley. Oakley and sophomore Ben Sexton (Kanata,
ON/Penticton Vees) earned the helpers.
Rensselaer sophomore Guy Leboeuf (West Palm Beach, FL/Cornwall
Colts) brought the hosts to within 2-1 at 13:28 of the first
period, as his shot from the left point found its way inside
the right pipe for his second of the season. Freshman Jacob
Laliberte (Rockland, ON/Cornwall Colts) earned the lone
assist.
Sophomore Matt Tinordi (Severna Park, MD/Olds Grizzlys) evened
the score at 2-2, 9:38 into the second period, when a shot
from the point by senior Patrick Cullen (Washington,
DC/Indiana Ice) caromed in off his skate. Sophomore Bo Dolan
(St. Paul, MN/Penticton Vees) picked up the secondary
assist.
Golden Knights senior goalie Paul Karpowich (Thunder
Bay, ON/Wellington Dukes) finished with 29 saves to earn the
win, while Merriam ended up with 14 at the other end of the
ice.
The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they
welcome Cornell and Colgate to the Houston Field House on
Friday and Saturday, respectively.
