Union's Streak Snapped at Brown
PROVIDENCE, RI – Junior forward Jeremy Welsh and sophomore
defenseman Mat Bodie each scored, but No. 12 men's ice hockey
(13-6-6, 7-3-3 ECAC Hockey) fell 3-2 to Brown (8-8-3, 5-5-2 ECAC
Hockey) in front of 956 fans at Meehan Auditorium.
Union took a 2-0 lead after one period of play, but Brown's Bobby
Farnham scored two power play goals in the second period, and Chris
Zaires added the game-winner early in the third period.
The Dutchmen outshout Brown 40-23 for the contest, including a 13-6
shot advantage in the third period.
Brown goaltender Mike Clemente stopped 38 shots and made several
key saves in the game's final moments, as Union earned three
consecutive power plays in the final 10:00 of the third period.
Union's best chances to even the game came on the man advantage.
Freshman forward Max Novak's stuff attempt from outside the crease
was stopped at the 15:00 mark.
In the final minute of the third period, with Brown's Ryan Jacobson
off for high sticking, and Union playing 6-on-4 with an extra
attacker, sophomore forward Kevin Sullivan grabbed a loose puck out
of the air, and nearly caught Clemente out of position, but the
puck was swept away before Sullivan could put a shot on net.
Union dictated the pace of play in the opening frame, outshooting
Brown 14-7 with a number of scoring chances.
The Dutchmen scored in the first minute of a game for the third
time this season. Junior defenseman Shawn Stuart took a shot from
the left point with traffic in front of the net, and junior forward
Jeremy Welsh tipped the puck through Clemente at :33 to give the
Dutchmen a 1-0 lead. The goal was Welsh's team-leading 17th of the
season, a new single season record for the junior forward.
Union scored on another deflection in front of the net late in the
period to take a two goal advantage heading into the first
intermission. Off a faceoff win by senior forward Kelly Zajac,
sophomore defenseman Mat Bodie fired a shot from the point that
deflected off a body in front of the net and past Clemente at
18:27.
Brown regained momentum on special teams, scoring two power play
goals in the second period to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the
final frame.
With Kyle Bodie in the penalty box for tripping, Brown's Dennis
Robertson fired a shot from straightaway that deflected off
Farnham's stick and into the net at 8:32. Farnham added his second
power play goal of the night late in the period, beating
Grosenick from the high slot at 18:36 with freshman defenseman
Shayne Gostisbehere in the penalty box for hooking.
Zaires fired over the shoulder of Grosenick from the slot at 2:38
of the third period to give Brown the lead, and the Bears held off
the Dutchmen the rest of the way.
Union will return to Messa Rink to take on Clarkson on Friday night
in a contest that begins at 7:00 p.m.
