Big Green Erase Three-Goal Deficit to Beat No. 18 Colgate in Overtime

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team erased a three-goal deficit after two periods and defeated No. 18 Colgate Saturday night at Starr Rink, 5-4. Senior Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) capped the furious comeback with a deflection in the high slot 2:43 into the overtime that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net for the game-winner.

Jones' goal was his third point of the night as he had two assists in the third period as part of the Big Green's (8-8-2, 5-5-1 ECAC Hockey) push to tie the game. His three points now give him 95 for his career (23g/72a).

Junior Mike Keenan (South Weymouth, Mass.) and senior Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) collected the assists on the OT winner, moving the puck across the point before Keenan's shot was knocked down by Jones.

The Raiders (12-9-3, 6-5-1 ECAC Hockey) are now winless in their last six games (0-5-1) after blowing the 4-1 third-period lead to the Big Green.

Sophomore Matt Lindblad's (Winnetka, Ill.) third goal of the season came on a nice feed across the top of the crease from Jones with 4:36 seconds remaining in the third to cap the Dartmouth comeback in regulation and force overtime.

Colgate set the pace of Saturday night's high-scoring affair with the game's opening marker 2:40 into the first period from Kurtis Bartliff.

Junior Mark Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) scored his second in as many nights and third of the season with 40 seconds remaining in the opening period to tie the game at one. Collecting a lose puck in the low slot, Goggin found just enough space to bury a backhand past Colgate goaltender Alex Evin.

Freshmen Eric Neiley (Warminster, Pa.) and Charlie Mosey (Prior Lake, Minn.) collected assists on the play. Neiley had two assists and a goal Friday night against Cornell, while Mosey also had a helper against the Big Red in the weekend opener.

Three goals in the final two-and-a-half minutes of the second period for Colgate seemed to blow the game open in favor of the home team as the teams headed into the locker room with the score 4-1.

However, two goals in the first 1:35 of the third period for the Big Green cut the deficit to just one.

Sophomore Eric Robinson (Foxboro, Mass.) started the early third-period scoring assault with his team-leading eighth of the season just 21 seconds in.

Mosey collected his second point of the night and the first goal of his young career 1:14 later. The first-year winger scored on an almost identical play to Mark Goggin's first-period tally, putting a high shot under the bar from just outside the crease, pulling Dartmouth to within one, 4-3.

After allowing three goals in the second, goaltender James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) came out for the third determined. He only faced seven shots in the period, but turned them all aside and finished the night with 24 saves in earning the victory.

Both teams struggled on special teams as they combined to go 0-for-9 with the man-advantage. Dartmouth was 0-for-4, while Colgate was held without a goal on its five power-play opportunities.

Evin finished with 23 saves in taking the loss for the Raiders.

The Big Green return home to Hanover to take on Brown and Yale next weekend at Thompson Arena. Saturday night's tilt with the Elis will mark the annual Eddie Jeremiah Celebration.

NOTES: Mello made his second start in three games after Cab Morris (Wilmette, Ill.) played Friday night against Cornell...With two assists on the night, Jones now has 72 for his career, moving into 13th all-time in program history... The win was the second time this season that Dartmouth came back after trailing an opponent by two goals (5-4 vs. Quinnipiac, Nov. 4)...It was also only the second time this season that the Big Green won when trailing after two periods of play, also against Quinnipiac...The win was just the second of the season on a Saturday night for the Big Green who had been 1-5-1 on Saturdays coming into the game.
