NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Wayne Simpson scored twice,
including the game's only power-play goal, and Troy Grosenick
stopped 29 of 30 shots to help No. 12 Union take a 3-1 ECAC Hockey
decision over Yale before 3,500 at Ingalls Rink.
The Dutchmen (13-5-6, 7-2-3 ECAC), unbeaten in their last five, had
a 36-30 edge in shots and never lost the lead after getting the
game's first goal. Grosenick and the guys in front of him, who
blocked 23 Yale shots, kept the Bulldogs (8-8-2, 5-5-1) off the
board on all four power-play chances.
Eli goalie Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.) made 33 saves and
helped stop five of six Union advantages, but couldn't get enough
support at the other end.
Yale outshot Union 13-11 but trailed by a goal after a crazy first
period.
The first goal came in a most innocent way. Simpson, who was not in
a scoring position, held the puck as if he was going to pass while
skating to the lower edge of the left circle and then wristed an
off-angle shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Grosenick stopped the first 10 Yale shots he faced, including a few
on the home team's initial man-advantage midway through the period.
Six seconds after the power play expired, Kevin Peel (Onaway, Alb.)
found the net to tie the score at 1-1. The senior defenseman
crashed the net after Kenny Agostino (Flanders, NJ) put a shot on
target and the rebound slipped out to the right of the goal where
he was quick to get his stick on it first for his third goal of the
year at 13:49.
The Elis were back on the power play two seconds after the
equalizer, but the advantage backfired on the Bulldogs. A careless
pass in the offensive zone quickly turned into a 2-on-1 rush and
shorthanded tally by Daniel Carr at 14:37.
Yale had a golden opportunity to tie it early in the second when
Shawn Stuart was called for taking down Agostino on a
mini-breakaway. Penalty shot 5:01. Deked left and tried to
tuck inside right post but Grosenick got his leg out.
"I thought we had a good first period and kind of lost our way in
the second," said Keith Allain '80, Yale's Malcolm G. Chace Head
Coach of Hockey. "We weren't shooting the puck, we were looking for
plays that weren't there."
Maricic, who faced 15 shots, made a number of top-notch saves in
the second, but a tripping penalty on his squad helped the Dutchmen
get an easy rebound goal to go up 3-1 late in the frame. Union
moved the puck beautifully and pelted the Bulldog goal until
Simpson smacked home a rebound at 15:45 for his 12th of the
year.
The Yale netminder impressed his coach with his first start of the
season. "I thought he played very well and got better as the night
went on," said Allain.
BULLDOG BITES: Rather than use a timeout while beginning a power
play, Maricic was pulled for 46 seconds to allow Yale to rest its
top unit in the first period. Jeff Malcolm (Lethbridge, Alb.) came
out and did not have to make a stop before switching back…
The only change in the lineup from last weekend was sophomore
forward Brad Peltz (Mount Kisko, NY) in for freshman Nicholas
Weberg (Oslo, Norway)… The Bulldogs are home Saturday at 7
p.m. to face RPI, 3-0 winners over Brown tonight at Providence.
