Rensselaer Blanks Brown
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior goaltender Bryce Merriam stopped
all 36 shots he faced and Nick Bailen recorded a goal and an assist
to lead the Rensselaer men's hockey team to a 3-0 victory over
Brown University, this evening at Meehan Auditorium. With the win,
the Engineers improve to 5-17-1 overall (2-8-1 ECAC Hockey), while
the Bears drop to 7-8-3 (4-5-2 ECAC Hockey).
Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) netted the eventual game-winning
tally, 1:39 into the second period, when his shot from the high
slot ricocheted off the crossbar and into the goal off the back of
Brown sophomore netminder Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cadore,
Italy). The power-play marker, which was Bailen's fifth of the
season, was assisted by freshman Jacob Laliberte (Rockland,
ON/Cornwall Colts) and sophomore Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON/Kingston
Voyageurs).
Junior Marty O'Grady (London, ON/Wellington Dukes) made it 2-0,
less than two and a half minutes later, picking up a rebound off a
Higgs deflection in front and burying his second of the year. Once
again with the man-advantage Bailen took a shot from the point that
Higgs redirected on goal. O'Grady then stuck home the rebound.
The Engineers capped the scoring at 18:30 of the final stanza, as
freshman Zach Schroeder (Prior Lake, MN/Saint Thomas Academy)
claimed a loose puck in the Bears' zone and finished into an empty
net for a 3-0 lead. The unassisted goal was his fourth of the
season.
Rensselaer finished 2 for 5 on the power-play, while Brown went 0
for 3. Merriam (4-12-0) was terrific in the first and third
periods, making 14 and 16 stops in those frames, respectively. He
earned his second career shutout, with the first coming against the
Bears earlier this season. De Filippo (1-1-2) was forced to make 12
of his 30 saves in the third period.
The Engineers return to the ice on tomorrow night, when they visit
Yale (7pm). Brown hosts #12 Union tomorrow (7pm).
