Harvard Ties No. 18 Colgate
HAMILTON, N.Y.—Steve Michalek matched a career high with
34 saves as the Harvard men's hockey team tied No. 18 Colgate, 2-2,
Friday night at Starr Rink, setting a school record with its
seventh tie of the season.
Marshall Everson registered a goal and an assist for the Crimson
(4-6-7, 3-4-5 ECAC Hockey), while Alex Killorn notched two helpers
and Peter Starrett scored his first collegiate goal. Eric Mihalik
made 17 saves for the Raiders (12-8-3, 6-4-1), and Chris Wagner had
a goal and an assist. Colgate finished with a 36-19 shots edge,
while Harvard won two-thirds of the game's faceoffs.
The tie was Harvard's third in its last four league games, and it
was the fourth game in the Crimson's last five overall that went to
overtime. The Crimson came from behind to take a 2-1 lead into the
third period before the Raiders rallied. Harvard wins the
regular-season series against Colgate, 1-0-1.
Killorn posted a 10-6 faceoff record, while Colin Blackwell was
8-1. Killorn and Danny Biega shared the team lead with three shots
on goal, and Colin Moore blocked three CU shots.
Each team tallied once in the first period, with Harvard holding a
12-8 edge in shots. Colgate took the game's first lead at the 6:06
mark. After weathering a couple consecutive strong shifts by the
Crimson, Colgate took the puck the other way, and Wagner banged in
a close-range one-timer to make it 1-0.
Harvard killed its only penalty of the period and took advantage of
a late Colgate infraction. Killorn took the puck from Pat ick
McNally in his own end, carried deep into the left corner of the
Raiders' zone and passed back and across to Everson. The junior's
high shot bounced off the right post and into the far side of the
net.
Starrett, who a would-be goal disallowed a week ago at Fenway Park,
netted one that counted to give the Crimson a 2-1 lead. He lifted a
shot over Mihalik's left pad to finish off a left-to-right pass by
Everson after Killorn had chipped the puck down the wall. Harvard
took that lead to the intermission, as Michalek made 12
second-period saves, including two on a late Colgate man
advantage.
Colgate evened the score with less than eight minutes to play.
Michalek stopped a shot from Wagner, but Austin Smith was the first
to the resulting loose puck, tapping it in from beside the left
post.
Both teams had offensive-zone possession in overtime, but neither
generated a shot on goal.
