Comeback Bid Falls Short for Big Green
ITHACA, N.Y. - Cole Bardreau scored 2:05 into overtime to give
Cornell a 4-3 win in a thrilling game Friday night at Lynah Rink
with the Dartmouth's men's hockey team. The Big Green (7-8-2, 4-5-1
ECAC) forced overtime with a game-tying goal in the third, but the
No. 9 Big Red (11-4-3, 8-1-2 ECAC) capitalized on a power
play in the extra period to earn the ECAC Hockey victory.
Freshman Eric Neiley (Warminster, Pa.) recorded the first
multi-point game of his career with a goal and two assists. His
third-period power-play marker tied the game with 10:14 remaining
and sent the game to OT after neither team was able to score the
duration of regulation.
Sophomore goaltender Cab Morris (Wilmette, Ill.) had 17 saves in
the game as the Dartmouth defense limited Cornell to just 21
shots.
After falling behind 2-0 midway through the second, the Big Green
offense finally woke up and scored twice in a 36-second span after
just two in the previous 180-plus minutes of action.
Playing in just his sixth game of the season, junior winger Mark
Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) scored his second of the year and first
since early November 17:55 into the middle frame. Goggin, fresh out
of the penalty box, found space over the left pad of Cornell
goaltender Andy Iles to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. The goal ended
a stretch of 350:36 for Iles without allowing a goal at Lynah.
Just 36 seconds later, senior Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) tied the
game with a power-play goal inside the right post for his fifth of
the season. Cornell's Nick D'Agostino put the Big Green on the
man-advantage 10 seconds after Goggin's goal with roughing penalty,
giving Dartmouth the chance to get the equalizer.
Senior defender Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was credited with
an assist after his shot from the point ended up on the stick on
Jones in the low slot. Neiley also picked up a helper on the Jones'
goal, his second of the night after also playing a part, along with
Charlie Mosey (Prior Lake, Minn.), on Goggin's goal 36 seconds
earlier.
Locke Jillson halted the Dartmouth push with a bullet over the
glove of Morris to make it 3-2 with 58 seconds left in the
second.
Neiley's rocket shot on the power play midway through the third
tied the game with sophomore Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) and
freshman Tyler Sikura (Aurora, Ontario) getting the assists off the
offensive zone faceoff.
Unfortunately for the visitors on this night, a penalty call a
minute into the overtime proved costly as the Big Red scored the
winner with the man-advantage. Bardreau knocked hom a loose puck ay
the top of the crease to send the 4,200 in attendance into a
frenzy.
Dartmouth finished the night 2-for-4 on the power play, while
Cornell was 2-of-5 on its opportunities with the extra player.
Iles was credited 25 saves on the night as the Dartmouth offense
controlled tempo throughout the game and was firing pucks on net
from all areas of the attacking zone.
The Big Green will travel to Hamilton, N.Y., tomorrow for a 7 p.m.
match-up with No. 18 Colgate at Starr Rink to close out a five-game
road swing away. Dartmouth will be back home next weekend for games
against Brown and Yale.
NOTES: The 36-second span between goals in the second period was
the third-fastest mark of the season as the Big Green had markers
28 seconds apart against Quinnipiac (Nov. 4) and 22 seconds apart
against Holy Cross (Dec. 30)...Dartmouth went to overtime for just
the third time this season. The previous two games were ties with
Harvard (3-3) and St. Lawrence (2-2); both at hom...Friday night
marked the first time this season that the Big Green scored twice
on the power play in the same game... Dartmouth has not won at
Cornell since a 5-3 ECAC Hockey Tournament victory on March 8, 2008
and in the regular season since Nov. 11, 2006 with a 3-2 win.
