Comeback Gets Yale Road Point
CANTON, NY – Points are tough to come by on the road in
ECAC Hockey, and even tougher when you get behind by two goals deep
into the game far away from home. The Yale men's hockey team showed
its poise and depth by erasing a 3-1 deficit to grab a point with a
3-3 overtime decision against St. Lawrence at Appleton Arena.
Yale (8-6-2, 5-3-1 ECAC), in sixth place but five point from the
conference leader, had a 36-30 advantage in shots while both teams
scored once with the advantage.
Andrew Miller (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) led the Blue with a goal
and an assists. All five players touched the puck before the junior
forward hit the net. His first-period tally with 1.6 seconds left
evened things at 1-1 and probably should have helped the visitors
seize the momentum heading to the second.
Instead, Greg Carey scored twice for SLU and it looked like the
Saints (8-11-3, 4-5-1) were headed for a big home win.
The depth in the Yale lineup was evident tonight as seven other
Bulldogs had one point each.
Bulldog blueliner Kevin Peel (Onoway, Alb.) one-timed an off-angle
shot on the power play to cut the margin to one at 17:35 of the
second. It was his second goal of the year.
Clinton Bourbonais (Dexter, Mich.), a sophomore Yale forward with
four goals, has been making some noise with his stick and body this
year. However, his goal with 4:19 left silenced the Appleton crowd
and put the Saints on their heels.
"Clint's goal was the result of a great sustained offensive zone
shift by that line. Lags (Antoine Laganiere) and Ruf (Trent
Ruffolo) did a great on the fore-check to keep pucks alive. Both of
them were involved in getting Clint the puck in the slot. His shot
went high glove side," said Allain.
A little more than a minute after Yale got the equalizer, the Elis
had to kill off a penalty that could have meant their doom.
Instead, the defense picked it up and blocked shots all over the
ice to send it to overtime.
"They scored right off the bat (1:38), so we were on our heels
right away. Our guys did a great job of battling back. This is a
tough place to play," said Keith Allain '80, Yale's Malcolm G.
Chace Head Coach of Hockey.
Jeff Malcolm (Lethbridge, Alb.), who had 10 saves in two frames and
one in the OT, totaled 27 for the game. He came up big in crucial
situations to enable his squad to come from behind for the point in
the packed ECAC standings.
Yale had four of the five shots on target in the extra session, but
Matt Weninger came up big in the home net. The SLU netminder, who
had 14 saves in the second, finished with 33 stops overall.
"We clearly carried the play in overtime. None of us are satisfied
with one point tonight," said Allain.
BULLDOG BITES: Both teams had Friday night off due to the North
Country blizzard that has both squads playing 4 p.m. Sunday
games… The Elis take on Clarkson at Cheel Arena Sunday
before heading back on the 7.5 hour trip to New Haven… This
was the fifth OT game this year for SLU… Jesse Root
(Pittsburgh, Pa.) played well tonight after missing both games last
weekend with an injury.
