Princeton Skates to Draw with Cornell
PRINCETON, N.J. (1/14/12) - The Princeton men's hockey team
scored three goals in the third period to tie No. 12 Cornell after
being in a 3-0 deficit on Saturday, Jan. 14 at Baker Rink.
The Tigers went 1-0-1 this weekend against two nationally ranked
teams. The tie comes one night after Princeton crushed No. 12
Colgate 6-2.
Both teams had great moves and chances on both ends, entertaining a
standing-room only crowd at Baker Rink. Shots stood nearly even
with Princeton taking 31 and Cornell 30.
Dustin Mowrey broke the stalemate at 17:06 of the first period with
help from Vince Mihalek when the pair put together a great 1-2 when
Mihalek sent a centering pass to Mowrey.
Princeton's best chances to score in the first came at 7:35 when
junior Rob Kleebaum and Andrew Calof had give-and-go with a shot by
Kleebaum being saved by Andy Iles at the left pipe. At the
13-minute mark, Alec Rush was released from the box just as Calof
was clearing. Rush skated unencumbered to the goal but couldn't get
as much momentum as the Big Red defensemen who squashed the
opportunity.
Mathieu Brisson made it 2-0 at 14:17 of the second as the Big Red
scored on a breakout. Joel Lowry won the puck in the corner and he
fed it to Sean Collins. Collins centered to Brisson who went stick
side for the goal.
Less than five minutes later Cole Bardreau gave Cornell a 3-0 edge
with a power-play goal. Barbeau was positioned on the doorstep and
was able to redirect a shot by Lowry with Collins getting his
second assist at 18:38.
Kleebaum again had the Tigers' best chance at getting on the
scoreboard in the second, about five minutes in, when he came
across the goal mouth and Iles had to make a toe save to keep his
team with the clean sheet. Princeton nearly lit the lamp with seven
minutes to play in the middle frame, when junior Michael Sdao had a
shot deflected by senior Marc Hagel right out in front. Sophomore
Jack Berger was wide open on the left side but his shot was a touch
too high as he went over the back of the cage.
Junior Eric Carlson started Princeton's three-game streak 3:13 into
the final frame. A face off in front of the Princeton bench
resulted in a scramble for possession. Rush got the puck in front
of the Cornell bench and pushed it to Matt Farris. Farris centered
it for Carlson who one-timed it past Iles.
Berger and Calof double teamed Nick D'Agostino behind the Cornell
cage and Calof skated around the left side of the net. Calof tried
to stuff it in the left side but was denied by Iles who lost his
stick on the save. He flipped the puck into the slot where Lowry
got it but Berger used a poke check to get the puck and back hand
it towards the net. Calof was still down low and was able to put it
in on the right side past a stick less Iles at 9:38 with a 4x4
goal.
Kevin Ross would score the game-tying goal at 12:14 with freshman
Tyler Maugeri and Kleebaum assisting on the power-play goal. Ross
fired a shot from the right point that found its way through
traffic and into the back of the net.
Each team would put two shots on goal in the final minutes of the
third, while Princeton had one more chance, 4-3, in the five-minute
overtime session.
Junior Mike Condon was terrific in goal making some huge stops
against the first-place team in the league. He finished the game
with 27 saves, while Iles made 28 for Cornell.
Princeton improves to 6-10-5 overall and 5-8-2 in the ECAC. Cornell
is now 10-4-3 and 7-1-2 in the league.
The Tigers will take two weeks off for final exams and semester
break before returning to the ice to face Connecticut on Tuesday,
Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
