Colgate Drops League Contest at Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. (1/14/12) – The nationally-ranked Colgate
men’s hockey team had another tough night on this
weekend’s road trip with a 7-1 loss to Quinnipiac on Saturday
evening.
Colgate (12-8-2, 6-4-0 ECAC) got its lone goal from Chris Wagner
with assists to Jeremy Price and Robbie Bourdon. Austin Smith had
his 12-game point streak snapped and he was held scoreless for just
the second time this season. Eric Mihalik had 14 saves in the loss,
while Steve Estep saw his first collegiate action in net and made
four stops in the third period.
The Bobcats (13-8-5, 5-5-4 ECAC) saw seven different skaters score
goals, while Connor Jones had four points on four assists. Kellen
Jones finished with a goal and two helpers and Zack Currie and Mike
Dalhuisen tallied two points on a goal and an assist apiece.
The Raiders were able to get the early lead with 6:19 left in the
first period. The score came on their third power play chance and
just after a 5-on-3 chance. Price ripped a shot that Wagner tipped
home for his eighth goal of the season. Bourdon was given an assist
on the play as well. The Raiders won the period in shots as well at
11-6 and led 8-1 at one point during the frame.
The lead didn’t last long into the second period as the
Bobcats lit the lamp 16 seconds into the frame. Zach Davies fired a
sharp angle shot that surprised everyone on the ice, including
Mihalik and the game was tied. The Bobcats then took their first
lead at 2-1 just 2:23 after tying the game. Connor Jones put a shot
on Mihalik and he made the save, but the puck came to Kellen Jones
and he hit the open net.
The Bobcats increased the lead to 3-1 with 10:16 left in the second
as Dalhuisen put in his second of the season. Kellen Jones and
Connor Jones were given assists as Connor Jones had assists in each
one of Quinnipiac’s first three goals.
Despite the Raiders controlling the puck in the final two minutes
and on the power play, it was Jeremy Langlois who scored the
Bobcats’ fourth goal of the period as he beat a defender on a
1-on-1 situation and then tucked it by Mihalik with 16 seconds left
top push the lead up to 4-1 in favor of the home team.
Quinnipiac increased the lead to 5-1 with 11 minutes left in the
game as Reese Rolheiser broke in on a breakaway and beat Mihalik
for his first goal of the season with the assists to Cory Hibbeler
and Spencer Heichman. The puck came off a Colgate skate at the
defensive blueline and Rolheiser swooped in to get the puck.
The Bobcats then added to the lead with a power play goal from
Currie to make it 6-1 with five minutes remaining in the game and
then Matthew Peca added his sixth of the season to make it 7-1 two
minutes later to close the scoring.
Colgate won the shot battle by a 27-25 margin. Quinnipiac scored
twice on the power play in six chances and the Raiders scored their
lone goal with the man advantage. They had five chances on the
power play.
Colgate will be back at Starr Rink for the first time in 2012 as
the Raiders host Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend.
