Clarkson Settles for Tie with Brown
With a season-high 41 shots, the Clarkson University Hockey team
had its opportunities against Brown on Saturday night, but the
Golden Knights could not make the most of their chances as they
settle for a 2-2 overtime tie against the Bears before 2,248 fans
at Cheel Arena.
Clarkson, which stands at 9-10-5 overall and 3-4-3 in ECAC Hockey,
hosts Yale in a Sunday afternoon game, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
The game was originally scheduled for Friday night, but was
postponed until Sunday due to inclement weather in the North
Country.
Playing in their first home game in almost two months, the Knights
came out with a strong start against Brown, outshooting the Bears
17-5 through the opening 20 minutes. It was the Bears, however, who
got on the scoreboard first.
Brown (6-7-3, 3-4-1) grabbed the early lead when Jack Maclellan won
a draw to linemate Matt Lorito, who skated alone from the left
circle and flipped in a quick shot past Clarkson senior goaltender
Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) at 6:47.
The Knights battled back and finally connected late in the stanza.
Sophomore Will Frederick (Allison Park, PA) swept in a rebound at
the right side of the Brown net at 14:50 after a shot by freshman
defenseman James Howden (Edgeley, SASK). Senior Captain Jake Morley
(Ogdensburg, NY) started the play with a pass from the goal line
out to Howden at the point.
Just 1:18 into the second frame, Brown retook the lead when Jeff
Buvinow picked up a loose puck in the Bears’ zone after a
shot by Clarkson’s Louke Oakley (Whitby, ONT) rang off the
post. Buvinow skated the length of the ice and fired in a shot from
the left circle for his first goal of the season. Richie Crowley
and Bobby Farnham assisted.
Once again, however, Clarkson came back to tie the game. At 9:23,
senior Nick Tremblay (Candiac, QUE) intercepted an errant clearing
pass from Brown goaltender Marco De Filippo at the top of the slot
and scored into a vacant net for his 10th goal of the season.
The Knights, who controlled play throughout the contest, outshot
the Bears 11-5 in the third and 2-1 in the five minute overtime,
but could not convert for the go-ahead goal.
Both teams struggled on the power play with Clarkson going 0-of-7
and Brown going 0-of-5.
Karpowich posted 15 saves, while De Filippo turned aside 39 of
Clarkson’s 41 shots.
