Bobcats Fall To No. 9 Cornell
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey
team lost to nationally-ranked No. 9 Cornell, 3-2, in an ECAC
Hockey match-up at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. With
the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 12-8-5 overall and 4-5-4 in ECAC
Hockey play. Cornell holds onto first place in the league
standings, improving to 7-1-1 in league play and 10-4-2
overall.
Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.) and Zack Currie (Victoria, British
Columbia) both scored for the Bobcats, while Spencer Heichman
(Yorba Linda, Calif.), Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia)
and Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) also had assists.
Cornell's Locke Jillson scored his third goal of the season to give
the Big Red a 1-0 lead. Dustin Mowrey dug the puck out of the
corner and fed Cole Bardreau on the half-wall. Bardreau skated to
the middle of the ice and left the puck fro Jillson, who blasted a
one-timer past Hartzell to give Cornell a 1-0 lead.
With 31-seconds remaining in the first period, Jeremy Langlois
(Tempe, Ariz.) scored his team-leading 13th goal of the season on a
wrap-around to tie the game. Mike Glaicar (Kamloops, British
Columbia) started the play when he sent the puck behind the Cornell
net. Spencer Heichman (Yorba Linda, Calif.) won the battle behind
the goal and fed Langlois who came up on Cornell goalie Andy Iles
right. Langlois then sent the puck off the opposite post to knot
the game at 1-1.
Zack Currie (Victoria, British Columbia) gave the Bobcats a lead
when he tipped a rebound past Iles on the Bobcats' power play for
his sixth goal of the season, the most among all Quinnipiac
defensemen and his fifth point in his last four games. Connor Jones
(Montrose, British Columbia) started the play when he picked up the
puck along the boards next to the Bobcats' bench. He then centered
a pass to twin brother Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) at
the blue line. Kellen walked the puck into the slot and fired a
shot on Iles. The puck bounced off Iles' chest and to his right
where Currie coasted in and poked the puck past Iles to give the
Bobcats a 2-1 lead. Connor extends his team-best point streak
to five games with the assist on the play.
After Cornell took a penalty, Sean Collins scored a short-handed
goal, his sixth overall this year, after intercepting a pass in the
neutral zone. Collins split two defenders and skated in on
Hartzell, one-on-one, before flipping the puck between the Bobcats'
goalies pads to tie the game at 2-2. The Big Red scored again with
7:32 left to take a 3-2 lead. Collins took control of the
puck in the neutral zone and skated down the left side of the ice
before finding Joel Lowry on the doorstep for the one-timer to give
Cornell a one-goal lead.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 when it hosts
Colgate at 4 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank
Sports Center. The Bobcats and Raiders are currently tied for
second place in the league standings, both with 12 points to date.
