Quinnipiac Plays to Tie Against Brown
PROVIDENCE, R.I –The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team
played to a 2-2 tie against Brown in an ECAC Hockey match-up at
Meehan Auditorium. With the tie, Quinnipiac goes to 12-7-5 overall
and 4-4-4 in ECAC Hockey play while Brown moves to 6-7-2 overall
and 3-4-1 in league action. Quinnipiac runs its unbeaten streak in
ECAC Hockey play to five games at 4-0-1.
"Brown is a good hockey team," head coach Rand Pecknold said. "They
play very well at home, we knew they were going to be tough. We had
a bad first period, but I think that we battled down the stretch in
the second and third period."
Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) and Zach Tolkinen (Lino Lakes,
Minn.) scored for Quinnipiac while Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake,
Minn.) records 26 saves in the tie. Hartzell has now held
Quinnipiac's opponents to two or fewer goals in 10 of his last 11
starts.
"Hartzell played well," Pecknold said. "We would've liked to get
the win but we'll take the three-point weekend."
Brown took a 1-0 lead 13:35 into the first period after the Bobcats
were whistled for successive penalties, putting the Bears on a
5-on-3 power play. Sophomore Dennis Robertson scored on a one-timer
from the point on a pass from Jack Maclellan. Matt Lorito also had
an assist on the play. It was Maclellan with his team-leading ninth
goal of the year to give the Bears a two-goal lead at the 18:40
mark of the first period on a pass by Lorito. Lorito set the play
up when he skated down the left half wall and fed Maclellan on the
opposite post. Maclellan deked Hartzell and then backhanded a shot
past the Bobcats' goalie. Ryan Jacobson also had an assist on the
goal.
Late In the second period, Quinnipiac scored twice in less than two
minutes to tie the game heading into the second intermission. Peca
(cut Brown's lead in half with his fifth goal of the year at the
16:56 mark before Tolkinen scored on the power play to tie the game
at the 18:20 mark.
Just six seconds after coming off the power play, Zack Currie
(Victoria, British Columbia) skated down ice and centered the puck
to Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia). Jones then slid the
puck behind him to Peca who blasted a shot from the slot to the
opposite post to put Quinnipiac on the board. The point is Curries
third of the weekend and fourth point in his last three games.
Peca's goal snaps a four-game scoreless streak for the
freshman.
Back on the power play moments later, Quinnipiac tied the game when
Zach Tolkinen (Lino Lakes, Minn.) scored his third goal of the
season on a one-timer from the point. Russell Goodman (Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan) dug the puck out the corner to the left of the Brown
goal and sent it to the right half-wall to Loren Barron (Glendora,
Calif.). Barron's pass found Tolkinen's tape, who unleashed a blast
that beat Brown goalie Marco De Felippo stick side.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, Jan. 13 when it hosts
Cornell at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 14 against Colgate at 4 p.m.
at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center in
Hamden, Conn.
