Yale Halts Tigers Streak at Three
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (1/7/11) - No. 20 Yale ended the Princeton
men's hockey team's three-game unbeaten streak with a 6-2 win at
Ingalls Rink on Saturday, Jan. 7.
Princeton struck first with a goal by senior Marc Hagel, but Yale
scored four straight to take a 4-1 lead early in the third. Senior
Derrick Pallis ended the scoring streak, but Yale followed up with
two special team goals at the close of the final frame.
Hagel intercepted a cross-ice pass in the Princeton defensive zone
and skated up the left boards with it. As he reached the left
circle, Hagel fed junior Michael Sdao at the point. Sdao one-timed
the puck where it deflected off a Yale defender and back out to
Hagel who buried the rebound at 8:31.
Following the goal, Yale would receive a bench minor for
unsportsmanlike conduct and Kevin Limbert would get a 10-minute
misconduct call. It would continue to be a highly-physical game
between these two Ancient Eight schools.
Kenny Agostino knotted the game at 10:37, just six seconds after
the bench minor was released. Agostino found an open lane straight
down the middle and fired glove side on goalie Mike Condon. Andrew
Miller fed Agostino the puck from the left side after getting it
from behind the cage from Brian O'Neill.
Trent Ruffalo would give Yale its first lead of the game at 15:36
when he intercepted a Princeton breakout and went top shelf.
Limbert expanded the lead for the Bulldogs at 3:30 of the second
period. Yale intercepted the puck in the neutral zone and Charles
Brockett dropped the puck off for Chad Ziegler. Ziegler's shot
rebounded out to Limbert who put it away. It marked the first
second-period goal in a Princeton game since Dec. 2.
Brian O'Neill scored a power-play goal at 4:24 of the third when he
fired a one-timer from the left point.
Pallis answered at 8:40 with an extra attacker goal. With Agostino
in the box, Princeton pulled Condon in favor of the extra skater.
Pallis would find the back of the net with just three seconds
remaining on the infraction. Fresman Tucker Brockett won the puck
off the boards and sent it up the left boards to Pallis. Pallis
pushed it cross ice to Goodwin, who slipped it back and Pallis
one-timed it through traffic. It marked Brockett's first career
point.
Yale scored two more special team goals to finish out the game.
Miller scored a power-play goal at 11:19 and Ziegler scored on an
open net as Princeton pulled Condon for a 6x4, hoping to recapture
the same magic it had minutes ago when Pallis scored.
Condon finished the night with a career-high 43 saves, five more
than his previous best set last weekend against Northeastern in the
Mariucci Classic. Jeff Malcolm made 23 saves in net for Yale.
Princeton falls to 5-10-4 overall and 4-8-1 in the ECAC. Yale is
now 8-6-1 overall and 5-3 in league play.
Princeton hosts Colgate and Cornell next weekend, Jan. 13 & 14.
The Tigers take on Colgate on Friday and Cornell on Saturday. Both
games start at 7 p.m. Tickets for the Cornell game are standing
room only. These will be the final games for the Tigers before
exams and semester break.
