Dartmouth Falls to Union in Weekend Finale
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - It was just one of those nights for the
Dartmouth men's hockey team. A night where nothing seemed to go
right for the Big Green. The No. 14 Union Dutchmen capitalized on
those misfortunes, taking the league contest, 7-1, and ending a
three-game winless streak in the process.
Dartmouth's (7-6-2, 4-4-1 ECAC Hockey) streak of four games without
a loss comes to an end as Union (10-5-6, 4-2-3) exploded with five
goals in the first 21:58 of play.
That offensive outburst chased starting goaltender Cab Morris
(Wilmette, Ill.) from the game to be replaced by senior Jody
O'Neill (Nepean, Ontario) 1:58 into the middle frame.
The Dutchmen scored on their first four power plays in the game,
including two in the first period.
Killing off a five-minute penalty late in the third period,
freshman Jesse Beamish (Mississauga, Ontario) scored the lone
Dartmouth goal. Coming in on an odd-man rush, Beamish pulled the
puck to his forehand and slid it through the pads of the Dutchmen
netminder for the only offensive bright spot of the night.
The marker was the second short-handed tally of the season for the
freshman, which ranks second in the league to this point. It was
his fourth overall.
After scoring three times in a six-minute window in Friday night's
game to lock up a win at Rensselaer, the Big Green offense couldn't
seem to find that same rhythm on this night as Union's Troy
Grosenick turned aside 29 shots in the game.
Union's Daniel Carr and Trevor Mingoia each had two goals, while
Shayne Gostisbehere, Jeremy Welsh and Cole Ikkala each had one.
It was the first time since Oct. 30, 2010 that Dartmouth allowed
seven goals in a game. On that night Yale beat the Big Green, 7-3,
in the second game of the Ivy Shootout.
Morris and O'Neill both had 17 saves for Dartmouth in the loss.
Dartmouth will now move on to play New Hampshire in the annual
"Battle for the Riverstone" next Saturday at the Verizon Wireless
Arena in Manchester. Puck-drop is set for 7 p.m.
NOTES: The Dartmouth lineup had a different look as for the first
time this season as the Big Green went with seven defensemen and
just 11 forwards. Dan Nycholat (Calgary, Alberta) was added to
Saturday night's lineup with junior forward Dustin Walsh
(Shannonville, Ontario) coming out following Friday night's 4-3 win
over RPI in Troy. Nycholat played the entire game on the fourth
forward line...Union was the last remaining ECAC Hockey team the
Big Green had yet to play this season. Other than UNH next
Saturday, the rest of the season has repeat opponents on the
schedule...
