Union Earns Tie Against Harvard in Return to Messa Rink
SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore forward Daniel Carr and
sophomore defenseman Mat Bodie each scored on the power play in the
second period as No. 14 men’s ice hockey (9-5-6, 3-2-3 ECAC
Hockey) earned a 3-3 tie against Harvard (4-4-5, 3-3-3 ECAC Hockey)
in front of 1,778 fans at Messa Rink.
Sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick stopped 23 shots and junior
forward Wayne Simpson added an even-strength goal in the first
period for the Dutchmen.
Union held a 36-26 shot advantage, but was outshot by the Crimson
9-7 in the third period, when Harvard scored twice to tie the
game.
Harvard defenseman Danny Biega scored at 7:03 of the third period
to tie the game at 3-3, just six minutes after Alex Killorn had
pulled Harvard to within a goal on the power play.
Biega took a cross-ice pass from Rence Coassin and beat Grosenick
high on a shot through traffic from the point.
With Union leading 3-1 at the start of the third period, freshman
defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere was called for tripping just 26
seconds into the period. Harvard, which entered the contest
with the nation’s best power play at 32.2%, scored its second
power play goal of the night when Patrick McNally found a wide-open
Killorn, who beat Grosenick from slot at 1:04 of the third.
The Dutchmen got off to a great start, scoring early in the contest
and outshooting Harvard 13-4 in the first period. Simpson beat
Harvard goaltender Steve Michalek from in close (33 saves) on a
setup from linemate Kelly Zajac at 1:05 of the first period.
Harvard answered on their first power play opportunity of the game
early in the second period, with freshman forward Mark Bennett in
the penalty box for interference.
Harvard’s Alex Fallstrom scored from the circle at 3:58 to
even the game at 1-1. The Dutchmen responded on the man advantage,
capitalizing on the second and third of three consecutive power
play opportunities in the frame.
With Harvard’s David Valek in the penalty box for hooking,
sophomore forward Josh Jooris (two assists) won a puck along the
boards back to Bodie, who beat Michalek from the point at
11:24.
Late in the period, with Killorn in the penalty box for hooking,
Bodie weaved through the Harvard defense on a rush up ice and fed
Jooris on the left wing. Jooris found Carr with a cross-ice pass,
who finished the play with a low shot past Michalek at 17:15 to
give Union a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.
Union outshot Harvard 3-0 in overtime and had the best chance of
the extra frame in the opening minute, when sophomore forward Matt
Hatch’s stuff attempt was smothered by Michalek.
Union will host Dartmouth tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. in a game
that will be broadcast on Time Warner Sports.
