Quinnipiac Upsets No. 20 Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team defeated No. 20 Yale, 2-1, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Conn. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 12-7-4 overall and 4-4-3 in ECAC Hockey play while Yale drops to 7-6-1 overall and 4-3-0 in league action. The broadcast of the game can be viewed on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV).

Quinnipiac goalie Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake, Minn.) held Yale to just one goal after stopping 25 of 26 shots on goal, including the first 18 she saw on the evening. Hartzell has now help the Bobcats' opponent to two or fewer goals in nine of his last 10 starts. Kevin Bui (Edmonton, Alberta) and Loren Barron (Glendora, Calif.) scored Quinnipiac's goals, while Zack Currie (Victoria, British Columbia) had assists on both goals.

Bui broke a scoreless tie with 1:31 remaining in the first period when he tipped in a rebound off a save by Yale goalie Jeff Malcolm off a shot by Zack Currie (Victoria, British Columbia). Cory Hibbeler (St.Louis, Mo.) won a face-off in the Bobcats' defensive zone, sending the puck behind him to Currie to skated the length of the ice before flinging a back-hand shot on Malcolm, who kicked the puck away. Bui was waiting on the door step where he one-timed the puck over Malcolm's shoulder to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Just over a minute into the second period, Loren Barron (Glendora, Calif.) scored on the power play when Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) won a battle in the corner and left the puck for Currie to the left of Yale's goal. Currie then found Barron alone at the point, who collected himself and looked-off a defender before sending his shot to the far post to give the Bobcats a two-goal lead.

Yale appeared to get on the board at the 4:50 mark of the second period, but had the goal waved off. The ruling on the ice stood after video review. Colin Dueck's shot got behind Hartzell, but only crossed the goal line after a player knocked the Bobcats' goal out of the place.

Yale cut the Bobcats' lead in half at the 8:11 mark of the third period when Brian O'Neill scored on the power play off a pass from Kenny Agostino. O'Neill deked Hartzell to his left and went backhanded to beat Hartzell, stick side. Tommy Fallen also had an assist on the play. Hartzell stopped Yale's first 18 shots on goal up to that point, before giving up the marker with 11:49 remaining in regulation.

Quinnipiac is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 7 when it heads to Providence, R.I. to take on Brown at 7 p.m. at Meehan Auditorium. Quinnipiac returns home on Friday, Jan 13 to host Cornell and Saturday, Jan. 14 against Colgate at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center.
