Kyle Essery put the St. Lawrence men's hockey team in front with a power play goal early in the third period, freshman Tommy Thompson added an insurance goal in the final four minutes and the Saints battled their way out of a 3-0 hole for a 5-3 win at Brown University Saturday night and a sweep of their ECAC road series.

The Saints might have thought they were in the little house of horrors that has been Meehan Auditorium for Saint teams over the last several years when Brown scored three goals on the same major power play late in the first period, but battled back with three in the second period and put the game away with the two goal third. In the process, they scored as many goals against Brown goalie Mike Clemente in Saturday's game as they had in Clemente's four prior starts against the Saints.

SLU improves to 10-15-3 overall and 6-9-1 in league play, leapfrog  Brown in the standings and are in a tie with Princeton for 10th, just two points out of eighth.

"That was a tremendous character win for us," said Saint associate head coach Mike Hurlbut. "With our past history in this building and the way the first period ended, we could have packed it in. There was no panic and we were able to outplay them the rest of the way. It would have been nice to do it the simple way, but it was a big weekend for us."

The Saints were playing a dead even first period against the Bears until a five-minute major and game misconduct was called against sophomore forward Sean Logue at the 15:27 mark of the period. Brown converted three times on the major in the final 3:17 to put the Saints in a deep hole.

Freshman wing Ryan Jacobson scored his second of the year against the Saints on a tip of a shot from the point by defenseman Richie Crowley at 16:43. Senior center Jack Maclellan then scored twice in the final three minutes, getting his 12th of the year off a feed by defenseman Dennis Robertson at 17:05 and his 13th after Saint goalie Matt Weninger was knocked down in the crease and tried to cover the puck with his glove, but was unable to hold it long enough to draw the whistle. Robertson and Jacobson assisted on Maclellan's second of the night at 18:51.

The Saints battled back into it with an outstanding second period, scoring two goals a minute apart midway through and then getting the tying goal off a rebound with 2:38 to go in the middle stanza. The Saints outshot Brown 16-8 in the middle period and had good chances to score more than the three they did.

Gunnar Hughes put the Saints on the board with his third of the year as his brother George found him alone in the slot with a pass from the corner and Gunnar snapped a shot inside the right post with Max Mobley also assisting at 9:45. Kyle Flanagan then pulled the Saints within one as he skated down the middle and snapped a shot under the crossbar for his 11th of the year at 10:45.  The Saints completed the comeback at 17:22 when Gunnar Hughes put a hard shot on goal which Clemente kicked out, but Jeremy Wick was there to pick up the rebound and put it back for his first of the season.

The Saints took the lead just six seconds into their third power play chance of the game as Jordan Dewey, who later left the game with a wrist injury, put a quick shot on goal off Kyle Essery's faceoff win and while Clemente kicked that one out, Essery cruised across the front of the crease and backhanded the rebound into the upper corner at 4:27 to give the Saints a 4-3 lead.

SLU iced it at 16:36 when Tommy Thompson curled out of the corner, took a pass from Rick Carden and wristed his second of the year past Clemente with Jake Drewiske also assisting. Brown pulled Clemente for an extra attacker with just over two minutes to play and then got a power play with 53 seconds to go, but the Saints and Weninger were able to prevent further scoring to complete the weekend sweep.

Weninger finished with 27 saves for the win, stopping all 16 he faced after the first period, while Clemente had 28 in his first career loss to the Saints after a 3-0-1 record in his first four.
