Quinnipiac Tops Dartmouth for League Win
HAMDEN, Conn. – In front a sell-out crowd, of 3,208, for
the third straight game at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD
Bank Sports Center, the Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team defeated
Dartmouth, 2-1, for a crucial ECAC Hockey victory. With the win,
the Bobcats improve to 6-6-4 in league play and 14-9-5 overall
while Dartmouth drops to 6-7-3 in league play and 9-10-4
overall.
Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) and Ben Arnt (Oakdale,
Minn.) both scored for Quinnipiac while Zach Davies (Smithers,
British Columbia) assisted on both goals. Dan Clarke (Belleville,
Ontario) stopped 32 of 33 shots in goal to pick up the win for
Quinnipiac as he improves to 7-3-0 on the season.
Just over two minutes into the first period, Connor Jones scored
his sixth goal of the season to put Quinnipiac on the board. Jones
won the draw to the left of Dartmouth goalie Jody O'Neill and sent
it back to Davies on the blue line. Davies fired a shot on goal
that O'Neill kicked to his left, where Jones was waiting. The
second year center collected the puck after it caromed off the
boards with his back to the net, turned and fired a shot past
O'Neill to put the Bobcats out in front, 1-0.
At the 12:51 mark, Arnt scored a power-play goal, his fourth goal
of the season, on a rebound to put Quinnipiac out in front, 2-0.
Davies picked up his second assist of the game when he put a shot
on goal from the point that was rebounded initially by Yuri
Bouharevich (Montreal, Quebec), who flipped the puck on net. After
O'Neill stopped Bouharevich's shot, Arnt collected the puck in the
crease and punched it past Dartmouth's goalie to give Quinnipiac
the two-goal lead.
At the 8:10 mark of the second park, Mark Goggin took off down-ice,
one-on-one with Clarke. Davies skated up from behind on Goggin's
left and knocked the puck off of the forward's stick, but was
called for tripping. Goggin was then awarded a penalty shot. Goggin
skated on Clarke and went to the back –hand, but Clarke made
a spectacular glove-save to deny Goggin and keep the Big Green off
the board.
With 6:18 remaining in the game, Eric Robinson scored his
team-leading 10th goal of the year on a tip in front of the net.
Jesse Beamish took a pass from Taylor Boldt and blasted a shot from
the point. Robinson, camped out in front of the goal, was able to
tip it over the glove of Clarke to cut the Bobcats' lead in
half.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, Feb. 10 when it travels to
Canton, N.Y. to take on St. Lawrence in an ECAC Hockey match-up at
7 p.m. at Appleton Arena. The Bobcats continue their North Country
trip at Clarkson's Cheel's Arena when they face the Knights on
Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.
