Carey's Overtime Goal Lifts Saints to Win at Yale
Sophomore wing Greg Carey scored on a power-play one-timer 2:25
into overtime to lift St. Lawrence University to a 4-3 ECAC Hockey
victory over Yale in New Haven Friday night, snapping a six-game
Saint winless streak and giving SLU its first league win
since November 19.
Carey, who had two goals in the 3-3 tie with Yale in Canton in
January, did it again Friday and now has six goals and nine points
in seven games against the Elis. His overtime winner, his first
game winner of the season, gave the Saints two points out of a game
in which they worked hard to build a lead only to see Yale come
back to tie it in the third.
"Getting the win is huge," said Saint associate head coach Mike
Hurlbut. "We played our best game in quite some time and coming
away with less than two points would have been disappointing. This
is one we can build on and get a roll going at the right time of
the year.
Carey scored the game winner after Yale's Antoine Laganiere was
called for a board at 2:09 of the overtime. Kyle Flanagan won the
faceoff in the Yale zone, the puck went back to George Hughes at
the point and Hughes relayed it back to Flanagan, who hit Carey at
the bottom of the faceoff circle and Carey's one-timer whistled
past Yale goalie Nic Maricic to end it.
SLU improves to 9-15-3 overall and 5-9-1 in league play and snapped
a bunch of streaks with the win, including a 0-7-1 mark in league
play since their 4-3 win over Harvard in November. Yale is now
9-11-2, 6-8-1 in league play
The Saints had to kill a five-on-three power play in the first five
minutes of play, but other than that played their best initial 20
minutes since the previous meeting between the two teams on Jan.
14. The Saints held Yale's power play, ranked sixth nationally at
23.9 percent going into the game, scoreless in three chances with
six of Yale's 14 first period shots coming on the
five-on-three.
Yale opened the scoring at the 11:09 mark of the first period as
junior wing Antoine Laganiere came out from along the end boards
and snuck the puck past Weninger with a shot from the bottom
of the right faceoff circlefor his eighth of the year. The Saints
came back to tie it just over five minutes later as Gunnar Hughes
rifled a shot off the crossbar and Greg Carey corralled the rebound
behind the Yale net. Carey came out from behind and tucked the puck
under Yale goalie Nick Maricic's glove as he tried to cover the
post at 16:26. Kyle Flanagan also assisted on the goal as the
Saints broke a scoreless drought of 160:14 and came out of the
first period tied 1-1
While the first period was a good one for the Saints, the second
period was a great one as SLU outshot Yale 14-5 and took a 3-1
lead.
Defenseman Pete Child broke up a Yale rush and early in the second
period and Jordan Dewey sent the puck out to the neutral zone where
senior captain Jake Drewiske kicked it to his stick with his skate.
Drewiske broke into the Yale zone, cut back to the middle and
wristed a shot to the lower right corner of the net which Maricic
just waved at as it sailed into the net for Drewiske's seventh of
the season
Dewey started the second scoring play of the period as well as he
fed Carey from the blue line and Carey cut through the slot before
shooting. While Carey's shot was tipped in the air, Chris Martin
pounced on the rebound and put it away for his ninth of the season
and a 3-1 lead at 10:15.
Yale cut the lead to 3-2 at 8:06 of the third when Chad Ziegler was
alone at the left post when a hit behind the net forced the puck
free. Ziegler tucked in his sixth of the year to bring Yale within
a goal, and with Maricic pulled for an extra attacker, Kenny
Agostino scored his ninth of the season on a two-on-one, banking
the shot in off the crossbar at 19:25.8.
Weninger was solid for the Saints, finishing with 30 saves against
the potent Yale offense while Maricic had 29 saves for Yale.
