Bobcats Doubled-up by Harvard
The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team lost to Harvard,
6-3, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at
the TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats drop to 13-9-5 overall and
5-6-4 in ECAC Hockey play while Harvard improves to 7-6-9 overall
and 6-4-7 in league action.
Three different Bobcats scored in the first period, as Bryce Van
Brabant (Morinville, Alberta) and Kellen Jones (Montrose, British
Columbia) gave Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead less than four minutes into
the game. After Harvard cut the Quinnipiac lead in half in the 15th
minute, Loren Barron (Glendora, Calif.) scored on the power play
with less than minute to play in the first frame to give the
Bobcats a two-goal lead (3-1) heading into the first intermission.
Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) assisted on two of the three
goals.
It was Van Brabant finding the back of the net first for the
Bobcats with Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.) credited with the
assist. Van Brabant's third goal of the year came just 2:01 into
the game. Jones increased the Bobcats' lead to two goals with his
sixth of the year at the 3:27 mark. Peca started the play, feeding
Zach Tolkinen (Lino Lakes, Minn.), who gave the puck to Jones.
Jones' blast from the left face-off circle beat Harvard starting
goalie Steve Michalek to give Quinnipiac the early lead. The assist
was Tolkinen's seventh of the season.
At the 15:22 mark, Harvard's Marshall Everson netted his ninth goal
of the season as Patrick McNally and Alex Killorn assisted on the
play. Just before the end of the period, Quinnipiac found
themselves with a man-advantage before Peca fed Barron, who
converted on his attempt for his sixth goal of the year to send
Quinnipiac into the first intermission with a 3-1 lead.
Quinnipiac held off Harvard for most of the second period before
the Crimson's Eric Kroshus and Danny Biega scored within 19 seconds
of each other to tie the game and send both teams to the locker
room knotted at 3-3 with a period to play. Harvard's Raphael
Girard, who relieved Michalek to start the second, stone-walled the
Bobcats to the tune of 26 saves (12 and 14, respectively) over the
final two periods of play.
After Biega's goal tied the game at the 14:49 mark of the third, it
was Luke Greiner on a pass from Colin Blackwell, who picked up his
second assist of the game, to give Harvard a 4-3 lead. After the
Crimson's fourth goal, Quinnipiac starting goalie Eric Hartzell
(White Bear Lake, Minn.) was lifted in favor of senior Dan Clarke
(Belleville, Ontario). Hartzell made 20 saves, while allowing four
goals, while Clarke stopped seven of eight shots on goal in the
final period. Alex Fallstrom scored at the 14:44 mark before Biega
scored his second goal of the game on an empty net to give Harvard
the three-goal win.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 when it hosts
Dartmouth at 7 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank
Sports Center.
