Brown Wins Mayor’s Cup Battle
PROVIDENCE, RI – Sparked by three second period
goals, the Brown men’s hockey team (6-6-1, 3-3-0 ECAC Hockey)
erased an early 2-0 deficit, scoring five unanswered goals to earn
a 5-2 win over Providence (8-8-1, 6-4-0 Hockey East) in the 26th
Annual Mayor’s Cup battle Sunday afternoon at PC’s
Schneider Arena. After dropping a pair of 4-3 decisions in 2008-09
& 2009-10, and posting a 4-4 tie last season, the win also
gives the six members of Brown’s Class of 2012 its first
career win over Providence.
After falling behind, 2-0, on a pair of PC goals, both scored on
breakaways, the Bears scored three goals in the final 7:00 of the
second period to take a 3-2 lead and then added two third period
goals to claim their first win in the series with Providence since
the 2006-07 season. Junior Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ) started the
comeback with his first goal of the season at 12:47 of the second
period, while Brown’s top line of senior Jack Maclellan
(Calgary, ALB) and freshmen Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, CO)
and Matt Lorito (Oakville, ONT) took over, combining for the final
four goals of the game.
All told, Jacobson (2g, 1a) and Lorito (1g, 2a) both finished with
three points, while Maclellan had 1-1-2 totals, scoring for the
fourth contest in a row and netting his third game-winning goal in
as many games. Brown’s special teams were strong, going 5-5
on the penalty kill with a short-handed goal (Maclellan’s
game-winner) and 2-6 on the power play. Senior Mike Clemente (Great
Falls, VA) was strong in net, finishing with 28 saves, 12 of which
came in the final 20 minutes.
With Brown on the first power play chance of the game just 3:28
in, PC capitalized on a short-handed chance to grab a 1-0 lead at
the 4:49 mark. After Brown couldn’t keep the puck in the
zone, Ross Mauermann collected the puck in the neutral zone and
skated in with only freshman Joey de Concilys (St.
Catharine’s, ONT) and Clemente to beat. From the top of the
right faceoff circle, Mauermann wristed a shot around de Concilys,
beating Clemente stick-side low to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.
The Bears outshot Providence, 8-6, in the first period, but
PC’s Alex Beaudry made a couple of nice saves, including a
few in the final minute of the period, to keep Brown off the board
through one period.
Providence doubled its lead 7:39 into the second period when Matt
Bergland capitalized on a breakaway, beating Clemente glove-side
high for histhird goal of the year. The play started when sophomore
Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) lost track of a pass from freshman
Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, ONT) at the blueline, springing Bergland
on the rush down the ice.
The Bears got one back just over five minutes later when Zaires
redirected a feed from freshman Kyle Quick (Buffalo, NY) from the
top of the crease for his first of the year at 12:47. Senior Bobby
Farnham (North Andover, MA) also earned an assist on the goal.
Lorito, who helped ice the UNH win on Friday with an empty net
goal, tied the score at 2-2 less than five minutes later,
redirecting a point shot from Wahl past Beaudry with 3:45 left in
the second frame. Maclellan also earned an assist on the
goal.
The Bears found themselves on the penalty kill for the third time
of the period 1:08 later, but Maclellan scored a short-handed goal
with 1:14 left in the period to give Brown a 3-2 lead. With
Jacobson trailing the play, Maclellan sent the puck across the
crease to Jacobson. The puck deflected off the skate of a PC
defenseman and into the net, as the Bears took their first lead of
the game.
Brown earned a pair of power play chances in the first 10 minutes
of the final period and Jacobson converted on the second one to
give Brown a 4-2 lead. Lorito carried the puck up the left wing and
centered it for Jacobson in the slot. Jacobson one-timed the puck
up and over Beaudry’s glove, scoring his third goal in as
many games at the 10:44 mark.
The Friars pulled Beaudry in favor of the extra attacker with 2:30
remaining, but took a penalty 13 seconds later to put the senior
goalie back in the net and set Brown up on its fifth power play of
the game. He was pulled again with 1:40 remaining and Jacobson took
a pass from Lorito and skated it into the empty net to help clinch
the win.
Having concluded the non-league portion of its schedule, Brown
resumes ECAC Hockey play next weekend when it hosts Princeton and
Quinnipiac in a pair of League games Friday and Saturday at 7:00.
The games kick of a stretch of 16 League games in a row, during
which time the Bears will alternate home and away weekends for
eight weeks.
