Tigers Tie Niagara in Mariucci Classic Consolation Game
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (12/31/11) - Seniors Marc Hagel and Derrick
Pallis had two points apiece as the Princeton men's hockey team
skated to a 3-3 tie with Niagara in the consolation game of the
Mariucci Classic at the University of Minnesota on Saturday, Dec.
31.
The teams traded power-play goals in the first period, which was
followed up by a scoreless second. Three goals came within three
minutes minutes, as Princeton took a 3-2 lead. Niagara would tie
the game with an extra-attacker goal in the final minute of
regulation.
Niagara converted on its second power-play opportunity at 11:04.
The Purple Eagles set up in triangular fashion and C.J. Chartrain
one-timed a shot from the left side that went top shelf. Kevin Ryan
and Giancarlo Iuorio were credited with the assists.
With 2.4 seconds left on the clock Pallis knotted the game.
Twenty-eight seconds after Niagara's Ryan Rashid was called for
roughing, Pallis ripped a shot from between the circles. Berger got
the puck inside the offensive zone and sent the puck down into the
corner to Hagel. Hagel had a wide open lane to Pallis who fired
over the blocker of goalie Chris Noonan.
Hagel gave Princeton its first lead of the game at 9:45 of the
third when he intercepted the puck on a bad turnover inside the
right circle and fired top shelf.
The lead would be short-lived however, as 31 seconds later Rashid
found the back of the net. Right off the face off, won by Iuorio,
Rashid hit Princeton netminder Sean Bonar with a shot and then got
his own rebound on the left side to make it 2-2 at 10:16.
Senior Brodie Zuk scored his second goal of the season when he
tapped in a Pallis shot on the right post. MacDonald fed Pallis on
the right boards and Pallis circled over to the left side and shot
from the bottom of the left circle where he crossed the goalmouth
to Zuk on the opposite side for the goal at 12:26.
Princeton's Andrew Calof picked up a penalty at 17:46, forcing the
Tigers to play two of the final 2:14 down a man. Once Niagara
gained possession goalie Noonan skated to the bench in favor of the
extra attacker. Ryan Murphy scored the 6x4 goal has he came around
the back of the net and stuffed it in between Bonar and the right
post.
Niagara had a 3-1 shot advantage in the five-minute overtime, and
had a 38-26 edge in the 65-minute game.
Bonar finished the game with 35 saves and Noonan stopped 23.
Princeton is now 4-9-4 on the season, and Niagara is 3-7-2. Both
teams declined to participate in a shootout to determine third
place.
The Tigers will resume league action next weekend, Jan. 6-7 when
they travel to Brown and Yale.
