GRAND FORKS, N.D.—No. 18 North Dakota took control with
four straight goals in the first period and ended the Harvard
men’s hockey team’s five-game unbeaten streak by a 7-3
score Saturday night at Engelstad Arena.
Alex Killorn, Eric Kroshus and Luke Greiner scored for the Crimson
(4-4-4), which held a 32-25 shots advantage. UND (10-8-2) got 29
saves from Aaron Dell and three points each from Danny Kristo and
Joe Gleason in front of a New Year’s Eve crowd of 10,980.
The Crimson limited North Dakota to 10 shots over the final two
periods, including just two in the third, but could not come from
behind for a second consecutive night. Killorn went 14-6 on
faceoffs and Alex Fallstrom was 7-2. Max Everson and Petr Placek
recorded assists for their first collegiate points.
Harvard got off to a dominant start, recording six shots before UND
got its first attempt on net. The Crimson then earned the first
power play of the game and quickly capitalized. Patrick McNally and
Danny Biega worked the puck around the top of the zone to Killorn
above the right circle. The senior then blasted a highlight-reel
wrist shot over Dell’s left shoulder at 5:33of the first
period.
North Dakota answered at the 7:02 mark. Harvard’s Steve
Michalek stopped Connor Gaarder’s point-blank chance, but
Brendan O’Donnell found the puck and poked it in after both
teams converged on the crease. The Crimson was whistled for a
penalty soon after, and Gaarder scored six seconds into the power
play.
Danny Kristo later scored both on a delayed penalty and the ensuing
power play to lift UND to a 4-1 advantage less than five minutes
before the first intermission. Kroshus cut the deficit to two goals
just 19.8 seconds before the break. Placek carried the puck into
the zone after a pass from Dan Ford. He was stopped at the blue
line but kept the puck in and found Kroshus low on the left side.
The senior walked in along the goal line and scored his fourth
goal.
Mark MacMillan got the UND lead back to three goals just 57 seconds
into the second period, finding the net with a shot from the left
point on a delayed penalty call. Michael Parks made it 6-2 at the
15:28 mark, and North Dakota took a four-goal lead to the dressing
room despite a 10-8 second-period shots edge for Harvard.
The Crimson began the third period with nearly four minutes left on
a major power play after UND’s Andrew Panzarella was whistled
for contact to the head late in the second. Danny Biega beat Dell
with a point shot, but the puck hit the left post, and Harvard
could not convert on the man advantage, which was cut short by a
holding call against the Crimson.
Greiner got Harvard back within three goals just over five minutes
into the period. Colin Blackwell took a pass from Everson on the
rush, skated up the left side and stopped inside the blue line. He
found Greiner at the bottom of the right circle, and the Faribault,
Minn., native waited before shooting over Dell’s glove.
Mike Seward briefly appeared to cut further into the UND lead with
less than six minutes left, but he was ruled to have redirected the
puck into the net with a high stick. Brock Nelson accounted for the
game’s final goal, with less than four minutes left. His shot
trickled over the line after Raphael Girard got a piece of it.
Michalek made 17 saves over two periods, and Girard stopped one of
two UND shots in the third. Biega, Fallstrom and Killorn shared the
Harvard lead with five shots each.
