STORRS, Conn. - The University of Massachusetts Lowell had
four
players tally multiple points, including a two-goal effort from
Joseph
Pendenza, and the 17th-ranked River Hawks defeated the
Rensselaer
men's hockey team, 7-2 in the first game of the Toyota UConn
Hockey
Classic.
RPI got its goals from freshmen forwards Ryan Haggerty and
Zach
Schroeder, while junior CJ Lee assisted on both markers. Scott
Diebold
made 17 saves for the Engineers, which held a 25-24 advantage
in
shots.
UMass Lowell scored three goals in the first period, including
the
game's first by Pendenza just 43 seconds into the game, before
Rensselaer got on the board. Haggerty, who missed the previous
three
games while ill, picked up his fourth of the year on the power
play at
4:35 of the second period. Lee and Brock Higgs were credited with
the
assists.
The River Hawks came right back, however, as Scott Wilson scored
just
30 seconds after Haggerty to regain the three-goal edge. UMass
Lowell
then scored the next two goals, one more in the second and one
early
in the third, for a 6-1 lead.
Schroeder's second of the season pulled RPI closer at the 16:46
mark
but Pendenza's second of the game and sixth of the year on the
power
play at 19:50 closed out the game.
Rensselaer faces either Connecticut or Army in the third place
game on
Friday at 4pm. The River Hawks, who got 23 saves from Doug
Carr,
return to action at 7:15pm.
