Union Defeats AIC on Banner Night
SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore forward Daniel Carr scored his
first goal of the season and senior forward Kelly Zajac had three
assists to lead No. 11/11 Union men’s ice hockey to a 5-2 win
over American International College on Banner Night in front of
1,735 fans at Messa Rink.
Freshman goaltender Colin Stevens picked up his first collegiate
win with 25 saves in relief of sophomore Troy Grosenick (one save),
who left at the 6:54 mark of the first period due to illness.
Union finished the night three-of-six on the power play, and set a
new school record for shots in a first period with 23 en route to a
58-28 shot advantage.
The Dutchmen took an early lead on their first power play of the
night, with AIC’s Brandon Fagerheim in the penalty box for
hooking. Zajac found junior forward Kyle Bodie on the doorstep, who
redirected a shot into the net at 13:36.
AIC’s Steve Mele scored on the power play with sophomore
forward Josh Jooris in the penalty box for interference to tie the
game at 14:59.
Union’s Wayne Simpson responded with another power play goal
with AIC’s Nathan Silwinski in the penalty box for high
sticking. Simpson scored from the slot to give Union a lead they
would not relinquish.
Carr scored his first of the year on Union’s third power play
of the night. Junior forward Jeremy Welsh fired a shot from
straightaway that was stopped by AIC goaltender Ben Meisner (53
saves). Carr fought for the loose puck and fired high to beat
Meisner at 8:33.
AIC’s Mele scored on a deflection at 13:24 of the third
period to pull the Yellow Jackets within a goal, but freshman
forward Daniel Ciampini followed his own shot, stuffing in a
rebound at 16:45 for his first collegiate goal to put Union up
4-2
Freshman forward Max Novak scored with a backhand shot on a
breakaway at 18:14 to round out the scoring for the Dutchmen.
Before the game, Union honored the accomplishments of the 2010-11
season with a banner ceremony featuring John Simpson and Luke Cain
from the Union hockey class of 2011.
