Dartmouth Edged by Yale
HANOVER, N.H. – Freshman Eric Neiley (Warminster, Pa.)
scored his first collegiate goal 13:52 into the second period, but
that would be the only goal the Dartmouth men’s hockey team
would get in a 2-1 loss Saturday night to No. 9 Yale at Thompson
Arena.
The match-up was the fourth and final game of the weekend as part
of the Ivy Shootout which featured the Big Green (1-1-0) and the
Bulldogs (1-0-1) as well as Brown (1-1-0) and Princeton
(0-1-1).
Yale jumped out to an early lead as Antoine Laganiere scored 9:10
into the opening period. It would remain that way until
Neiley’s first goal in a Big Green sweater tied it at one
apiece.
Junior Eric Robinson (Foxboro, Mass.) redirected a long pass from
sophomore Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) in the defensive zone.
Robinson, stationed near the red line, pushed the puck out into to
center and the streaking Neiley moving in on goal. With the puck on
his forehand, Neiley went high over the glove of Yale’s Jeff
Malcolm for the tally.
Yale’s Chad Ziegler scored the eventual winner five minutes
later as he put his team on top, 2-1, a lead they would protect the
rest of the way.
The Big Green could not get the power play going again for the
second night in a row, finishing 0-for-3 Saturday night. Dartmouth
had gone 0-for-6 in its 2-1 victory over Brown on Friday to start
the weekend.
Yale was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
Big Green senior goaltender James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) stopped
23 shots in the game, including 12 in the second period.
Dartmouth controlled play early, but was unable to score on any of
its 14 first-period shots. Malcolm finished the game with 29 in all
as the Big Green offense was bearing down on him the entire
night.
Brown edged Princeton, 3-2, in the first game of the afternoon
played at Thompson.
The weekend of non-conference games against Ivy foes marked the
start of the season for Dartmouth, but ECAC Hockey games will begin
next weekend as Quinnipiac and Princeton are in Hanover Friday and
Saturday night. Game times for both contests are set for 7 p.m.
