Union Suffers First Loss of Season
DURHAM, NH – Kevin Goumas scored 31 seconds into
overtime to help New Hampshire earn a 2-1 win over No. 11/11 Union
(2-1-3, 0-0-0 ECAC Hockey) in front of 4,972 fans at Whittemore
Center Arena.
Union outshot New Hampshire 38-23 for the contest and held the
Wildcats scoreless in five chances on the power play. The Dutchmen
owned a 13-6 shot advantage in the third period and had the first
scoring chance in overtime.
Just ten seconds into the extra frame, sophomore forward Kevin
Sullivan had his rebound shot batted away by the UNH defense, and
the Wildcats went the other way for the game-winning score.
Sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick (2-1-2) stopped 21 shots, while
UNH goaltender Kevin Di Girolamo made 37 saves for UNH's first win
of the season.
Sophomore defenseman Mat Bodie scored at 9:39 of the third period
to tie the game at 1-1. Bodie chipped the puck into the UNH zone
off the end boards to himself and beat Di Girolamo over the
shoulder to even the score.
Union's penalty kill kept New Hampshire off the scoreboard early on
in the contest.
At the end of the first period, the Dutchmen killed off 2:11
seconds of power play time, including 26 seconds of a 5-on-3 to
keep the game scoreless. Grosenick's best stop on the penalty
kill came with just under three minutes to play, when he slid to
make a kick save on UNH defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk.
Earlier in the period, Grosenick came up with another great stop,
stopping Dalton Speelman's shot from slot with his shoulder at the
10:59 mark.
After killing off another penalty in the second period, the
Dutchmen were unable to clear the puck from their own end. New
Hampshire's John Henrion gathered the puck in the corner, skated
out in front and slipped a backhand shot past Grosenick to give UNH
a 1-0 lead at 4:04.
UNH's Di Girolamo came up with two big stops late in the second
period to keep Union from tying the score. Junior defenseman
Greg Coburn skated towards the slot unmarked and fired a one-timer
into the body of Di Girolamo at the 18:15 mark. Just 30 seconds
later, freshman forward Trevor Mingoia's open look from the circle
was kicked out away from traffic.
The Dutchmen will take on American International College tomorrow
night at 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink, as Union will raise two banners
(Cleary Cup, NCAA Tournament) to honor the accomplishments of the
2010-11 team.
