Engineers Beaten by Colorado College
TROY, N.Y. – Junior Rylan Schwartz scored two goals,
including the eventual game-winner to lead the third-ranked
Colorado College men’s hockey team to a 4-1 victory over
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this evening in
non-conference action at the Houston Field House. With the
win, the Tiger improve to 3-0-0 on the season, while the
Engineers drop to 1-5-0.
Colorado College junior Scott Winkler (Asker, Norway) sent a
centering pass in from the right that Schwartz (Wilcox, SA)
buried high over a sprawling attempt by RPI junior goaltender
Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, MD/Topeka RoadRunners). The goal,
which was scored at 9:11 of the opening period, was Schwartz's
fourth of the season.
Schwartz gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at 19:46 of the second,
taking a feed from his brother Jaden Schwartz (Wilcox, SA) at
the right side of Rensselaer cage and ripping a shot over
Merriam's left shoulder, for his second marker of the contest.
Senior defenseman Gabe Guentzel (Woodbury, MN) earned the
second assist.
The Engineers answered 10 seconds later, when senior Patrick
Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice) picked up the rebound of a
shot by sophomore Guy Leboeuf (West Palm Beach, FL/Cornwall
Colts) on the doorstep and stuck home for his first of the
year.
Two unassisted, empty-net goals from Colorado College juniors
Mike Boivin (Delta, BC) and William Rapuzzi (Anchorage, AK)
capped the scoring with less than 30 seconds to play in the
third period.
Tigers' junior goaltender Joe Howe (Plymouth, MN) earned the
victory making 24 saves, while Merriam finished with 30 stops
at the other end of the ice.
The Engineers host Colorado College again, tomorrow night at
the Houston Field House (7pm).
