Bob Gaudet Wins 300th-Career Game as Dartmouth Downs Brown
HANOVER, N.H. – In his 15th season behind the Dartmouth
men’s hockey bench, head coach Bob Gaudet earned his
300th-career win in his team’s 2-1 victory over Brown to open
the season at Thompson Arena Friday night as part of the Ivy
Shootout.
Freshman Tyler Sikura’s (Mississauga, Ontario) first-career
goal in his first collegiate game proved to be the game winner as
he found the back of the net with 3:04 left in the third
period.
Gaudet ended last season with 299-career wins following a victory
over Colgate in the ECAC Championships Consolation Game in Atlantic
City. He wasted little opportunity in reaching the milestone this
season, doing so in the team’s opener.
Junior Dustin Walsh (Shannonville, Onatario) picked up the first
assist on the winner as he made a centering pass from the
half-boards into the low slot where Sikura corralled the puck and
went upstairs for the Big Green’s second goal of the night.
Freshman Brandon McNally (Saugus, Mass.) picked up his first
collegiate point as he moved the puck from the corner to Walsh,
collecting the second assist.
The game, part of the Ivy Shootout, featured a good deal of
physical play in the neutral zone which lead to a lack of scoring
by both teams for a long stretch after Dartmouth captain Mike
Keenan (South Weymouth, Mass.) opened the game with his
fourth-career goal just 4:09 into the game.
Keenan’s shot from the point found its way through a crowd in
front of Brown’s Michael Clemente and into the net for the
first tally of the season for the Big Green (1-0-0).
Walsh and Sikura assisted on the Keenan marker, giving them both a
two-point night after the third-period winner.
Brown (0-1-0) tied the game at 1-1 early in the third on a tally
from Jarred Smith. Smith collected a loose puck outside the top of
the crease and managed to sneak a high shot by the outstretched
reach of Dartmouth goaltender James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.).
Smith’s goal was the only blemish on the night for Mello in
goal. The ECAC preseason all-conference team member stopped 24
saves in earning the win. Only a few instances required Mello to
make sprawling saves as he benefited from the solid play of Keenan
and senior alternate captain Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) as
well as the entire defensive core in front of him a majority of the
night.
Clemente was also solid in net for Brown, stopping 19
Dartmouth shots in 59:07.
The Big Green will take on Yale Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the
final game of the weekend. Yale and Princeton played to a 2-2 draw
in the first game of the day. The Bears and Tigers will play the
early contest Saturday, scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at
Thompson.
