Clarkson Wins Fifth Straight with Victory at Bentley
Reigning ECAC Hockey Player of the Week, sophomore Allan
McPherson (Kinburn, ONT) came through with the deciding goal and
senior Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) put in another solid
between the pipes as the Clarkson University Hockey team extended
its winning streak to five games with a hard fought 3-2 victory at
Bentley University on Friday night.
The Golden Knights, who own a 5-1-1 overall record, close out the
season-opening non-league portion of their schedule with Saturday
night’s game at Bentley.
Playing its first game of the season at home, Bentley outshot the
Knights 35-28, but Karpowich was strong with 11 saves in each
period to backstop the Green and Gold to the road win.
The Knights played their best to start the game and took a 2-0 lead
while outshooting the Falcons 14-11 through the opening 20 minutes.
Shortly after killing off a five-minute major, Clarkson scored
twice in a 66-second span to take control.
Senior Nick Tremblay (Candiac, QUE) knocked in a rebound at 7:17
for his fourth goal of the season and 20th career tally with
freshmen Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) and Kevin Tansey (Hammond,
ONT) assisting.
Clarkson’s power play which entered the weekend ranked third
in the nation (29.4%), connected again with sophomore Ben Sexton
(Kanata, ONT) knocking in a shot from the point by freshman
defenseman Sam Labrecque (Granby, ONT) at 8:23 for his third goal
of the year.
Bentley (1-5) picked up its play over the final two periods,
outshooting the Knights 24-14. The Falcons got on the scoreboard
with a goal by Tyler Quartuccio at 13:40 of the middle frame to
make it a one-goal game through 40 minutes.
McPherson, who collected three goals and both game-winners last
weekend, came through again on Friday. At 4:08 of the third,
McPherson took a pass from Sexton and fired a shot under the
crossbar for his fourth goal of the season and third consecutive
game-winner.
The Falcons made it a 3-2 game at 9:49 on Brett Hartung’s
goal, but that was as close as the home team would get.
Clarkson, which has scored at least one power-play goal in every
game this season, went 1-of-4 with the man-advantage and killed off
all five Bentley power plays.
