ANN ARBOR, MI – Junior forward Jeremy Welsh had two goals,
and sophomore forward Daniel Carr had a goal and an assist to lead
No. 12/13 Union (7-3-3, 3-2-0 ECAC Hockey) to a 6-3 win over No. 11
Michigan (7-7-2, 3-6-2-1 CCHA) in front of 5,022 fans at Yost Ice
Arena.
Sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick made 33 saves, while
Michigan's Shawn Hunwick made 30 stops in net, as both teams
recorded 36 shots.
Sophomore forwards Kevin Sullivan and Cole Ikkala and freshman
forward Max Novak added scores for the Dutchmen, who were facing
the Wolverines for the first time in program history.
Union raced out to a 4-0 lead in the second period and held off
Michigan's comeback attempt with two more goals in the third
period.
Michigan scored on its only power play opportunity of the game
when Phil Di Giuseppe put a rebound off the back boards past
Grosenick at 10:36 of the second period to make it 4-1.
Michigan's David Wohlberg lifted a backhander over Grosenick at
4:33 of the third period to cut Union's lead to 4-2.
But Welsh scored his second goal of the game on the power play,
taking a diagonal pass from freshman forward Shayne
Gostisbehere and firing a shot over Hunwick at 9:22. The goal was
Welsh's 18th career power play goal, four short of the Union record
in the DI era.
Just 57 seconds later, Ikkala scored his first career goal

put the Dutchmen up 6-2.

round out the scoring for the Wolverines.
The Dutchmen opened with three goals in a first period that
included a Michigan shorthanded penalty shot stopped by
Grosenick. Union has now scored 21 first period goals in 13 games
this season.
On Union's first power play opportunity of the contest, sophomore
forward Daniel Carr corralled a Michigan turnover and beat Shawn
Hunwick over the shoulder to give Union a 1-0 lead at 8:40 of the
first period. The goal was Carr's sixth of the season and 16th
career power play goal.
Just under two minutes later, sophomore forward Kevin Sullivan
stripped Michigan's Kevin Clare in the offensive zone and beat
Hunwick with a low shot on an unassisted goal at 10:31.
Later in the period, with Union on a 5-on-3 power play, Michigan
nearly swung momentum back on their side after sophomore defenseman
Mat Bodie tripped up Michigan's Kevin Lynch on a breakaway to
earn a penalty shot. Grosenick made a pad save on Lynch's forehand
shot to keep Union in front.
Just as Union's power play opportunity expired, freshman forward
Max Novak beat the Union defense and put his own rebound past
Hunwick at 17:34 to give the Dutchmen a 3-0 lead heading into the
first intermission. The Dutchmen finished 2-of-6 on the power
play for the game.
